Hi. Linear conversions are basically the RAW data right from the camera without any gamma adjustments. Back in the days before DPP we used File Viewer Utility to create 16 bit linear TIFFs. When these converted file are opened in PhotoShop they are very dark. You then apply a very strong tone curve to lighten up the photo. This was the only way to get complete control over the tonality in your photos. Other wise you had to settle for the tone curve built into what ever RAW converter you were using.
