I'm using the new version of DPP and I noticed that one of my photos displays a different menu in the RAW edit window. Under the histogram instead of the box that you can click on/off for “shot settings” it displays “linear.” When I check this box and process the RAW file it will create a linear TIFF either 8 or 16 bit or an 8bit JPEG. This is a handy setting but how do I get it to apply to all my photos? I have tried saving the settings and applying them to the rest of the photos but to no avail. I have also double checked my preferences and there isn’t anything that I can see that would allow for this. Anyone have any ideas or is there a bug in the software?
Thanks,
Bob Cooper

Here's how to apply a linear tone curve to multiple RAW images in DPP:
1. In thumbnail view, select any RAW image.
2. Click on Edit image window icon in upper left corner of toolbar.
3. Check the Linear box under the histogram on the RAW image adjustment palette.
4. Pull down the Edit menu and select "Copy recipe to clipboard."
5. Click on Main window icon in upper left corner of toolbar to go back to thumbnail view.
6. Select all RAW images you wish to process with a linear curve.
7. Pull down the Edit menu and select "Paste recipe to selected image."
8. When asked if you want to apply this recipe to all selected images, click Yes.
9. Click on the Batch Process icon in the upper right corner of the toolbar.
10. Make any desired settings in the Batch Process dialog box and click Execute.
Hope this helps!

Hi. Thanks for the info but for some reason I don't have the box named "linear". Instead it is named "Shot settings." This is true for every photo I have tested except one. In this sole exception the box in the "RAW image adjustment" tab does in fact say "linear."
My question is, why does it change for just this one photo and which is the right label, "Shot settings" or "linear?"
Thanks,
Bob Cooper

The "Linear" checkbox should be under the histogram, in the center. If it's appearing in the White Balance window, something is wrong. If it happens with only one photo the file may be corrupted.

Hi. Thanks for your input. By the way the box appears in the correct spot. It is only the label that changes depending on which photo I have displayed in the Edit window. I assumed that Chuck didn’t understand my original post as I considered your corrupted file theory and expected him to offer something like your suggestion. It does seem likely since every photo that I have loaded into DPP has done the same thing except one.
If a corrupted file is the problem then my question is why does it change the program? Like I said in my original post I can’t find anywhere in the program settings or preferences where this box can be re-labeled with “Shot settings” instead of “Linear.”
I’m not a software engineer but if anyone has some insight please let me know. This is one of those little problems that while it doesn’t seem to affect anything that I’m doing right now, it does leave me unsettled. I would hate to think that my 1Ds is creating corrupted files that may be a problem down the road.
Thanks,
Bob

I should have asked what version of DPP you are using. The layout of the Edit window changed when the program was updated from version 1.6.1 to 2.0. If you were using version 1.6.1, then the Tone Curve Property box below the histogram should default to Shot Settings. It shouldn't say Linear unless you had selected and saved that setting in a previous editing session.

Hi. I solved the problem. It seems that if you have the process parameters in the camera set to standard then the box reads “Linear”. When you set the camera to one of the other choices then the box reverts to "Shot settings."
Not sure why this is because I understood the process parameters would only apply if you had the camera set to capture JPEGs. The files I’m viewing were all RAW captures only.
By the way I’m using the latest version of DPP but it wasn’t until I loaded a file from two years ago that I noticed the label changed. In the old version of DPP all my photos were showing the same “Shot settings” box.
Thanks for all your help.
