DPP wishlist

OK, time for another DPP wishlist thread (to spin off the side discussion going on at the 1Ds forum in the 85 1.2 thread).

There are a bunch of things, and I'm sure others will point out some popular issues... but I'll go for something a bit more obscure:

Make the Mac version of DPP as fast or faster than the Windows version! Would this be as simple as making the next version of DPP a universal app to take advantage of the Intel Macs? I don't love it how DPP on a Fujitsu laptop with a 1.6 Ghz processor outputs conversions as fast as my G5 DP.
Allow user designation of the cache/temp/scratch files. After editing a few hundred images DPP on my G5 2.3 DP bloats up to 2-3GB of virtual memory, and gets really bogged down (I've got 4GB of RAM). Quitting and restarting solves the problem, but it's a pain.

That's it for now, but there is more... time to catch a flight.....

Re: DPP wishlist

A few things to add:

-I'd like to be able to select or deselect (Check and Uncheck) images in every view with a single key press, not just the Main window. (that is, also in the Image Window view when there are thumbnails showing)

-the program should process files in the background (like C1, Bridge, etc.) and allow us to continue working while it doing its conversions.

-it should do a better job of highlight retention, like Bridge/ACR does.

Here's a sample:

ACR at -1.7:
http://www.pbase.com/r_p/image/50061887

DPP at -2.0:
http://www.pbase.com/r_p/image/50077479

(along these lines, a seperate highlight recovery slider would be great. Something like Photoshop's highlight/shadow tool BEFORE conversion would be great!)

-faster conversions would be nice.

-add/remove check marks with a single button press, instead of the ATL+button routine.

-more logical sorting in all viewing modes

-should be able to select several thumbnails at a time within the edit window >> and then the changes made on the curve, etc. should effect all selected thumbnal images at once. (In Windows, Control-A should select all the thumbnails in the Edit Image window Thumbnail list, and CNTL-Click should allow selecting several at once...)

Thanks!

(If any of this is currently available and I just don't know it, please let me know... :-)

Re: DPP wishlist

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

DPP has always had this capability via the batch process function. In fact, it's possible to run several background batch rendering sessions simultaneously if you want, although speed suffers if you try.

Re: DPP wishlist

Yep, but batch processing always processes all files you have in the edit image window. It's not possible to select just a few of them to process differently (say for extra shadow detail), apart from going back to the main window. It would be nice to offer a possebility to process a file with 2 different settings at once. (If any of these things is already possible, I'ld appreciate to know how )

Re: DPP wishlist

Rene:

The operation you describe (processing the same image in DPP with different recipes) is possible by duplicating the image and applying separate recipes to each file. To do this in the Edit Image Window, use the "Add recipe and save as..." command in the Edit menu for each version of the image you want to create, then run a batch process on as many versions of the same image as you wish.

Re: DPP wishlist

I would love to have an option that while capturing in EOS Capture that the DPP software doesn't take up both processors in our Dual 2.7 just saving the files. I know that the DPP software is trying to make previews of the files, but I want to be able to turn that off. Of course, that option may already be there, but I haven't found it yet. It is a real pain to have several images in the pipe line and not being able to control anything on the computer because it is tapped out. I should note that all we use it for is the capturing bit, we don't process in DPP so we really don't need the previews, but as it needs to be open to capture with, we are stuck. Thanks =)

I believe if you remove the check mark from the Edit Image Window Enabled at Capture box on Prefs>General Settings tab, you'll be all set.
