Lots of noise in C1 PRO previews...

Hi there,

I'm using a 10D, Mac PB G4 w/1GIG RAM, 128mb graphic mem, OSX 10.3.5 and using C1 PRO 3.5.2 (v1081). When I open my RAW files in C1 there is an incredible amount of what appears to be noise in them. Mostly where there is background blur, shadows, or blacks. I also have PM 4.2.1 and PS CS, and this does not happen in either of these applications. Anybody out there having a similar experience? If so, any solutions...?

Regards,

Richard....

No, in fact in general C1 does better a noise handling, but note that C1 also tends to pull more out of the shadows so if your comparisions aren't tonally equalized C1 conversions may appear to be noisier. But "an incredible amount" doesn't sound right.

Also note that some people have thought they were getting noise or banding when it was mostly due to the use of an LCD monitor.

Re: Lots of noise in C1 PRO previews...

Hi Don,

Thanks for the reply.

I can't see how it would be the monitor. I was running the Windows version of C1 PRO on a Dell laptop before I changed over to Mac. Never had this problem till now. It actually looks quite awful, lots of red and green speckles...looks like a combination of noise and jpeg artifacts. It's not actually in the conversions but in the preview when I'm making my adjustments in C1. Like I mentioned before this does not happen in any of the other applications that I'm using.

I have experienced the same thing ... but only in shots that had been subsequently sharpened in photoshop. The previews look bizzare ... but the shot doesn't look like that ... only the preview in C1. Scared me the first time it popped up !

Relax, this is just the preview. Many camera software packages do this such as the Leaf. Highlights look like Christmas trees. If you want to check an area to see what it will look like once it is fully processed, use the magnifier tool, and the view that window creates is in full finished quality with no noise or artifacts.

I would be curioes to see a screen shot of your preview (please show the entire C1 window) as well as the RAW file. Sound a little strange. What magnification is the preview. if not at 1:1 that might be the problem.
