20D FVU or DPP?

Now that I can't use Capture One or ACR for raw conversion, I'm stuck with one of the two Canon software products. Any suggestions as to which one is better?

Neil

Re: 20D FVU or DPP?

As there aren't too many folks with the 20D (YET ), I suppose you'd be in the best position to tell us! Almost all the other observations regarding DPP vs. EVU posted here have been based on other Canon cameras and an earlier version of the software.

So...how about testing it out for us and tell us what you think?

Re: 20D FVU or DPP?

Hi

Just been playing with FVU and DPP for a day now since getting my 20d so my comments are preliminary at best.

FVU does quite nice proof thumb nails. So far I have not been able to find where to edit the captions it gives. All I want on a proof is the image number not time and date as well. DPP has no provision for producing Proof sheets! Both programs are similar and yet different. DPP seems to be Ok for batch correcting and processing though it does not have a fast Small JPG output like C1 for proofs. On my 2.8 Pentium 4 laptop both programs take about 20 25 seconds an image. does not seem to be a limit on files in a batch. No ability in either program to display files by capture time. This is handy when using the camera in a tethered mode as it always shows the last thumbnail. Both programs just add the latest image to the bottom of the list and it scrolls off the screen. Images appear a bit grainy though I have not had time to look at them on my main system with the 22' Mitsubishi monitor.

DPP seems to have a bug - when transpiring a raw file to Photoshop CS two copies are transferred. One has a TMP extension and the other is Untitled as per normal in Photoshop. FVU transfers fine to CS Both programs transfer correctly to PS 7

DPP supports file monitor and printer profiles.

Sharpening options are not as good as C1 and seem to mirror the cameras sharpening options C1 is my program of choice for most images and I like very much C1’s Soft sharpening for initial output to an editor.

Conclusion so far is that I will use mainly DPP but some things will have to be done on FVU. I am going to try the Beta of Breeze Browser 2.11 to see if it is any better.

The only snag of being an early adopter of a camera is the slow delivery of support programs.

Re: 20D FVU or DPP?

Like others, I've had to use the Canon programs with the 20D files. I had been using C1 SE, but I also have Photoshop CS with ACR.

First, between ACR and C1 SE, I prefer C1 for its workflow and exposure correction features (I don't sharpen or crop on conversion). I use Photoshop, however, for contact sheets and of course, regular editing, but Photoshop ACR is kind of clumsy in its exposure correction capability. What I don't like about C1 SE is the 20 file batch conversion limit.

I've grown to like DPP 1.1 quite a bit over the last week or so. I works on dual monitors a lot better than C1 (separate browse and edit windows, undocked palettes), and I like the ability to save file edits as "recipes" to use on groups or any other files at any time. It also converts any number of files in batches in the background.

It's considerably better than EVU. I'm bugged enough by C1 SE's batch limit that I might not go back to it.

Re: 20D FVU or DPP?

Hi There,

Yep-- I've come to the same conclusion-Quirky as it may be the Canon DPP is king of the Hill in the RAW stakes.Yep- could do with a progress bar ,ability to load your specific profile/etc-and the B****er decides it will close on you spasmodically!--but a smooth cleaner workflow you will not find --and the colour plus cleaness of the Files is superb and quite 'filmlike".
Someone posted it has a fair bit of CA in the converted file--Hmm?-I hav'nt noticed--anyway good old QM Pro corrects that in a jiffy. I see an upgraded 1.5 version is to be released with the 1Ds MkII--wonder if we will be able to download it as previous?

I too have given up on Phase C1-- and heaven forbid all that whining and bleating on the Picture flow forum--" My SE don't do this!!"--"The Pro farts when I tether"--all these problems --and some of them STILL are not rectified-Blah!
Yep--my C1 has dropped all it's colour Mgnt/Camera Profiles--does'nt process occasionally ,I 've mailed Phase Support 3 times, and as of today no replies.
We cannot go on forking out money to this mob--and be left to fend for ourselves--bad show--thumbs down from me.Pity I kinda liked some of it's features.

Yep-- those DPP"recipes" are kinda unique!

Good Shooting,

Des
