Could Adobe make a RAW format?

At PhotoshopWorld Adobe recently said they would be encouraging an industry wide standard RAW format (with credit to Ron Rogers at D1scussion). Kudos to Adobe for trying. I can't see this happening any more than an industry wide standard lens mount.

How about Adobe make their own new digital RAW format, something like *.PSR? Then all those NEFs, CRWs, RAFs, etc could be saved to it retaining access to ARC in Photoshop for manipulating white balance, exposure, etc. This new format should be as archival as PSD but hopefully more open source like TIFF. Is this feasible?

Re: Could Adobe make a RAW format?

The growing number of raw formats is no pleasure but I don't see the big camera manufacturers interested in a standard.

Possible may be a meta raw format that could be used to save camera raw files to a standard format without loss. Still most raw files need special handling that reflect the issues with the special chip and processing in any given camera (e.g. noise).

Re: Could Adobe make a RAW format?

actually "feasible" and successful needs not to be the same :-)

I am for a standard raw file for a long time. But here technique meets politics.

Re: Could Adobe make a RAW format?

Are there other lesser known advantanges in a standard Raw format besides the obvious? We know there would be advantages to users...any advantages for camera companies?

Just look to Nikon and their troubles with Nikon View rotating files. An earlier version of View rotated the green channel, leaving red and blue alone. The recent release of Nikon View 6.1.1 distorted and hosed nefs when rotated as well. A standardized file format, including such elements as a rotation tag, would prevent much of this mess. When two software products (Nikon View and Capture)from the same company can't agree on how to process identical files, something is seriously wrong.
