Thumbnails/indices from EOS-1D RAW files?

I'm trying to create contact sheets from my EOS-1D RAW files (on a Mac) and wondering how others are doing this. I tried the File Viewer Utility "Save index..." option, and it has to decode each RAW file, in addition to wasting space for displaying image timestamp and unnecessary white borders. With GraphicConverter, I can put 42 images in an 8x10 page to get decent proofs, but GC needs JPG's to start.
Is there any better program for creating indices from RAW files, or a way to extract the thumbnails which are contained in the RAW files to JPG's so that I can use them for GC indices? There would be other productive uses for these quick-and-dirty previews as well.
I haven't examined all of the options of iView MediaPro yet, so perhaps it will do what I want, but I'd like to hear what others are doing.
Thanks,
-Patrick

the cheap and dirty way is to shoot RAW & Small JPG. Use the JPG's for the previews, contact sheets and the RAWS for the real processing. Been several www.dpreview threads around this. Luminous Landscape also has a section on digital workflow that's basic but worth looking at.

Re: Thumbnails/indices from EOS-1D RAW files?

ImageMagick and perl. There's an embedded TIFF: 288x192, about 280k in size in the EOS 1D RAW image. Saved as a quality 95/100 JPEG it's about 39k, quality 75/100(default): ~ 12.5k

If you use the command line 'convert' utility, it will complain about an 'unknown field with tag', create 2 files and append a '.0' & '.1' to the end of the imagename with with the jpeg. The '.1' is nothing and can be removed. Using perl will also create the multiple files, but not complain about anything.

Let me know and I can whip up a little scripts for you

Re: Thumbnails/indices from EOS-1D RAW files?

I've just about settled on iView Media Pro for my browsing and proofing. There is a trick, however, which I've had to discover twice (darn short-term memory loss). If you want larger proofs (fewer than 10 or so to a letter page), make sure you are in the "media" tab, not the thumbnails, when you go to print. Then you can set your layout to print as large a proof as you need. I've made nice four-to-a-page and six-to-a-page prints from both RAW and JPEG files. Pay attention to the header and footer settings to customize your pages. Good luck.
