Re: Canon 1D MKIII Autofocus- Interactive Review

I shot 28 frames on my 1D III of our black Poodle Pippa retrieving a red ball late yesterday afternoon, using a 100-400 4.5 - 5.6 L IS lens hand held at 400 mm set wide open at 5.6 and ISO at 6400 which gave a shutter speed of 1000. They were shot in AI servo mode using centre point focus. I have posted the photos which can be viewed at:

http://www.prophotohome.com/forum/ph...ry.php/cat/566

Unfortunately the photos do not load in ascending order and I am not sure if a guest can sort them into correct order. I re-sort them each time I open the album but it obviously reverts back as soon as I close.

The run back for Pippa was through light and shadow which can be plainly seen. I think any oof are more the operator than the camera ( body 514209 firmware 1.1)

Cheers

John

Hi John,

Do you have a lens that's faster? It's my understanding through this forum and FM (Fred Miranda) that the problem appears to manifest itself with wide open apertures in the 2.8 range. In fact, many testers have demonstrated that there isn't much of a problem at F4 or higher... so it's unlikely you would experience the issue at F5.6. There is also evidence pointing to the issue cropping up in bright sunlight on hotter days.

Personally, I think there are far too many instances of OOF in the Mark III community to lay blame to the operator.

I'll be conducting my tests on Thursday/Friday with my 529xxx and 70-200 F2.8 IS. Hot and sunny...
More to come!

All the best (and wish me luck).
Cheers.

Tim

Re: Canon 1D MKIII Autofocus- Interactive Review

Thanks for that Tim

I will try my 70-200 2.8 lens on the next bright sunny day and as long as Pippa is happy to be the running model again I will see what results I get. Good luck with your test. I shot some coastal landscapes with the 1D III today and I am very pleased with the results.

Cheers

John

Can it be that the problem is like the problem was with the Nikon D2x?

It looks like 1.1.1 firmware is available in Japan for the pro shooters at Osaka. Won't be available until mid-September for public distribution?

John, did you have a chance to take more shots of Pippa at F2.8? As I take a better look at your shots of Pippa, most of them appear soft (but perhaps it's the resolution, my monitor, or I'm just looking too hard!?). I'm very curious to know if you get sharper results with your 70-200 at F2.8. At the very least, it would be interesting to do a comparison.

I've gotten mixed results shooting my 9 year old and 3 year old with my 70-200 IS at F2.8. F4.0 and higher seems fine. F2.8 with centre focus AI servo. Some of the shots are brilliant (incredibly sharp!) and others are disappointing - either out of focus or soft. Softness appears to be a known issue as well as OOF.

For the record, my testing is with a 529xxx body. My OOF isn't too bad, but most of my shots are soft. I would normally suspect my 70-200 2.8 IS, but I'm also getting some brilliant shots with that lens as well. Weather conditions for testing was bright sunlight, hot and humid - 90 deg.

Finally, here are some comments I posted on another forum regarding my recent conversations with Canon service here in Eastern Canada:

"I spoke with the Canon Service facility for Ontario yesterday morning. The 1st person I spoke to mentioned receiving the tools and parts from Japan necessary to fix the AF problem. He then said that I should speak with the 1-800 Support number first. I called Support and found them to be useless. I called the Service Facility again, got someone different, and they didn't know anything about "tools or parts". They went off to talk to someone for more details, and then told me to call Support. I waited until the afternoon, called the Service Facility again (hoping to get the first guy) but then got the same run-around as above. In both cases, I strongly felt as if they knew a whole lot more but weren't allowed to provide any details other than follow the standard script "check this, check that, call them, bring it in, etc.".

My sense is that there are a few issues - some but not all people affected by "faulty" hardware or hardware that needs "tweaking" and other issues requiring another firmware update.

I also get the strong feeling that the Techs and Reps are being muzzled by Canon. Sure, some of the techs are ignorant to the problem, but when they go off and speak to someone about it, they come back on the line.... sounding different somehow. My paranoia? Perhaps. "

Re: Canon 1D MKIII Autofocus- Interactive Review

Hi Tim

I have not had managed to get another series of shots with the 70-200 2.8 lens yet mainly due to weather. I will try with a model that is not as woolly as Pippa as I think that it is difficult to get good sharp images when there is a lot of soft wool on the model. I will probably get my wife to drive a car up the drive towards me on a good day. This will mean a bright sunny day and also, very importantly, not one where I have blotted my copy book because the brakes and steering may mysteriously fail.

I will post the results (including the tyre marks on my jacket) .

Cheers

John

So, are we just waiting to see what's going on with 1.1.1?
