Canon iPF6100 FRUSTRATION!

Unfortunately, I listened too much to the "hype" sprouted by Canon reps at a trade show I attended in Montreal. They led me to believe that with this printer, if I stuck with genuine Canon media, I would not have to invest in custom icc profiles. Since Canon media was fully supported by the printer and available drivers. I'm frustrated to find this is not the case at all! If I have to invest in custom icc profiles, believe me, I sure won't be getting them for any Canon media!

I'm experiencing a great deal of frustration with this new printer, first because it has proven quite difficult to obtain genuine Canon media for it. (Even the Canon-recommended dealer here in Montreal I bought the printer from won't supply Canon media!) Second because now that I finally have SOME Canon media, I'm finding the icc profiles are either unavailable or do not work. The Canon "imagePROGRAF Media Guide" is also of no help, as it doesn't even mention the iPF5100 or iPF6100 printers and the recommended settings for paper with the iPF9000 don't seem to correspond with anything available in the iPF6100. Frustrating!!

The "Canon Digital Learning Center" web site in the States has 10 icc profiles available for download. However, there appears to be a problem with two of them for the iPF6100 (PC version). The profiles download fine but simply do not install, whether they are manually copied to the proper directory or by right-mouse clicking on the profile and choosing "Install Profile". The other 8 install just fine, so please believe me, it's not an operator error at this end.

The profiles that don't work are:

Photo Rag 188 - 6100_PR188_FAP_D50_N.icc
Premium Bright Photo Satin 260 - 6100_PBPS260_HWSG_D50_N.icc

In addition, the Adobe web site message board reports a similar problem with a Mac-specific version of 5100_PBPG260_S5_D50_N.icc.

Here's the only Canon media I have been so far able to obtain (more than 3 weeks after getting the printer!):

Photo Rag 188 - the downloadable icc profile does not install!!!!!
Satin Photo 190GSM - no icc or setting recommendations available
Premium RC Photomatte - no icc or setting recommendations available
Enhanced Velvet - no icc or setting recommendations available

Are there any other users of the iPF6100 here? Does anyone have a working copy of that profile for the Photo Rag 188? Have you given up on Canon's media and their profiles? Are you going the custom icc route with different papers?

Thanks for any comments/suggestions/help.

Re: Canon iPF6100 FRUSTRATION!

I understand your frustration. There are some very happy Canon printer users here but I've had problems also.

I would call Peter Dulis (pronounced Doolis) at Canon Canada directly. He is Manager of Large Format Printers & Consumer Imaging Group in Toronto. His line is 905-795-2111 ext. 3493. You can also email him at pdulis@canada.canon.com but I would phone for sure and back it up with an email.

He is one of Canada's foremost experts on printers and it's his job to make sure dealers are stocking his products.

If he can't get things corrected (& I would give him a chance) then I would demand a full refund. If you bought the printer from US, DO NOT disclose this. When I bought mine, they were not available for 6 months in Canada and Canon Canada won't touch it. On mine, a tiny pin broke inside the carriage and it can't be repaired or replaced at less than half the cost of a new one. I'm mad too.

Doug,

A pin broke in your 6100 and it's NOT covered under warranty? Those printers aren't that old, are they?

Re: Canon iPF6100 FRUSTRATION!

I just got a call from a Canon sales rep. They are trying to sell me a ipf5000 DEMO unit with used inks for $1,700. Cdn. They are $999. US brand new with free delivery to the border - that's $950. Cdn.

Maybe you see why Canon has some problems here in Canada Norm. They're cameras are now at par, the accessories are still at the old prices and the wide format printers are insane.

It is a 6200.
1 yr warranty and it's almost 3 years old now. The SS pin was attached to the carriage with plastic clips and at the very back in a place impossible to get at without a complete disassembly. When I get a chance, I'll take the carriage and head apart and see if I can epoxy it in place. Unlikely it will go together with correct alignment though. Not much else to do except take it to the dump.

What bothers me the most is that the repair tech on phone support (paid & non Canon) says that until this year, Canon refused to allow tech support to go through a diagnostic start up with a customer on the phone. Once that was done, the problem was obvious. He said the broken pin was a 'common' problem and guessed that was the problem before we even did the diagnostic.

I bi*ched at Canon Canada and they will do nothing because I bought it form US supplier at PMA. Canon did not release the model in Canada for 6 to 8 months after that. Maybe I should try Canon US. I think I learned my lesson though. That's why I'm looking at HP. Dell has replaced the same defective color laser printer TWICE now and still been very nice about it. Service counts.

Maybe just go with a consumer 17" and consider it a throw-away.

The icc profiles available on the Canon Digital Learning site have been updated to repair the "broken" profiles.

I bought the iPF5000 when it first came out and went through the tremendous learning cure required to get great prints. Canon support has been lacking, especially updated printer drivers for Mac OSX.

The Canon iPF wikispace has been a great help and support system for these printers:

Hi Jerry,

Not quite right. There WAS an earlier problem with DOWNLOADING some of the profiles (four of them would error out after getting the filename) and that HAS been corrected. Now they all download just fine.

But two of them do NOT INSTALL. Different problem.

There are two ways to install ICC profiles: Copy them to the appropriate directory (when you do this, those two profiles do NOT appear in the print with preview dialog OR in the plug-in), or right-mouse click (on a PC) and choose "Install Profile". This second method does not work either, again only for those two profiles - the rest install just fine.

Cheers!
