Norm, I agree with you on the weird support on Canon. When I bought the printer Canon USA told me it was only sold by Office Supply dealers, not Photo Supply dealers. They cold not answer why that was. I know in Canada, this continues to be their priority as their main dealer is a drafting supply store. Obviously there's something either they or we are not getting here. | | Re: Canon iPF6100 FRUSTRATION! | |

Sigh. Just when I thought there was a new "hero" printer company (I was getting stoked about Canon) you had to reveal this.
Four years ago I started sending all my digital print orders out to a traditional photofinisher who uses Kodak/Fuji photographic paper. My experiences with anothe inkjet manufacturer was different but of the same ilk as what you are experiencing.
I got off the invincible archival chest-pounding hype-filled world of inkjet printing four years ago when a five hundred dollar printer only needed a third-party thousand dollar RIP to become functional.
Am happy to use my old HP7960, its a reliable machine for quick proof sheets and text documents.
I am optimistic that one manufacturer may now have what I need and would mention the company but I've heard enough on this topic.
Unless you go higher end with an extended warranty there is simply no protection.

| | | Re: Canon iPF6100 FRUSTRATION! What I seem to find Ed is that anything that is sold through the prosumer sales channel on printers seems to have extended warranties and an easy 'return' policy because you're talking hundreds not thousands per unit. Prices are much more realistic. The advantage of the prosumer printers is that you can afford to toss them after a year or two since they've easily paid for themselves within weeks. The huge disadvantage is that you pay through the nose on ink. Commercial units have huge ink capacity and are more realistic per print in cost of ink, but huge price difference. In speaking to Canon, they poo-pooed me for even suggesting that I (a pro) would think about buying a prosumer model. Ya, and I shouldn't buy the 40D either? That's correct, a pro should buy the MIII. Give me a break!!
Personally, I'm not going back to non-original ink. I've tried it and happy for a few months then disaster. Just my experience. I'd prefer to price the prints high enough to not matter about a buck a print on ink differences. I don't personally believe any of the archival testing to be close to real-world use.
We're kinda back to nikon/canon thing. There is no perfect printer for all of us. I'm certainly thankful that HP & Canon are giving Epson some competition. We're all better off when we have a good choice. I just wish they all would spend more time making a better printer in a few models instead of dozens of models. What do I know though.

In any case, believe it or not, I have just received a call from someone in the Canon customer info center because of my post here (or perhaps the one on the blog) and they say they're going to try to help. I'm very impressed that they did this and will wait patiently (as patiently as I can, that is!) to see what they come up with.
It looks like Canon IS listening to us!

I just checked again, and still only find what I said in my last message: "And for the iPF6100, I found on your web site profiles for paper I don't use, and none for the Canon media I mentioned in my message."
I need profiles for the Canon media I mentioned in my first message in this thread: Satin Photo 190GSM (which you say is coming), Premium RC PhotoMatte and Enhanced Velvet 255gsm. Also Premium Bright Photo Satin 260gsm.
And I'll ask again, will you ship paper orders to Canada? Will you have inks for the iPF6100?
Thanks!
Eldor

Yup, that's what I expected from Peter. Nice guy ... try to help ... in the end, little results. That's what I got, but was hoping you would get something better since this is a current problem, not an older model. Canon has a long way to go in Canada if they want to have happy pro printers.
My personal suggestion is to send it back for a refund and buy another brand if this isn't solved soon.
That's the only way changes get made in the system. I'm more of a 'hammer a squeaky wheel, if the grease don't work' type of guy.
good luck. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
