Re: Canon iPF6100 FRUSTRATION!

Doug,

Thanks for that info... I have already been in contact with Peter (starting about two weeks ago) and he's certainly been pleasant and willing to help, but so far nothing worthwhile has come of it. It was Peter who sent me the Media Guide (which doesn't even mention the iPF5100 or 6100 and the info about the 9000 isn't particularly helpful either).

Now he's suggesting a fairly generic "Fine Art Photo" setting in both the printer and profile for the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 188, which DOES work but does not give accurate colors. At least not as accurate as I expected, or as accurate as I believe the real Photo Rag 188 ICC will be (when I get one that installs).

He also had no suggestions for the Premium RC PhotoMatte or Enhanced Velvet Canon medias I have. For the Satin Photo 190gsm he suggested using a semi-gloss photo setting (which is fairly generic and doesn't give accurate colors).

I'm finding the support from Canon lacking for this printer. The way it stands now, it looks like I will have to invest in custom profiles, even for Canon media, since nothing so far works.

By the way, I did buy the printer in Canada, from one of the two local dealers that Canon recommended to me. Neither one of them, unfortunately, will supply me with Canon media (both sell their own lines of paper). Peter Dulis could not suggest anyone in Montreal at all, and suggested The Drafting Clinic somewhere in Ontario (west of Toronto I believe). It turns out that they only had the media I listed (and bought).

Other Canon medias might be better supported, but so far I have not been able to find any. A web search turned up two US suppliers who have it but both refused to sell to anyone in Canada. SIGH

Re: Canon iPF6100 FRUSTRATION!

Doug,

I'm really sorry to hear about this problem. I am not terribly surprised about the lack of technical response from Canon (either Canada or US) on these printers, unfortunately. Canon has a sharp division within the company between their consumer products (Pro 9000/9500) and their office products, which the larger than 13 inch printers fall into. I think the IPF 5000/5100 is part of the office products line and the printers of your size certainly would be. I have heard, repeatedly from several large printer users/dealers, that Canon Office really doesn't want to deal with photo printers, no matter what the size. I would imagine that they have great support for their big color laser printers.

Fortunately, for the printers I have, support has never been needed. With the problems with Epsons and with big Canons, HP may be the only choice. I hope HP Canada gives you better support than you've been getting.

Re: Canon iPF6100 FRUSTRATION!

Eldor,

I only tried one of the profiles from the Canon site for my 5000. I tried the PBright Photo Satin 260. The profile was made using Special 5 media setting. I wanted to compare it to a profile I made for the same paper using Print Fix Pro. The Canon profile printed with too much contrast and saturation, the greens were on the blue side. The profile I made with PrintFix Pro used SatinPhoto 240 media setting, 729 patch target plus the extended gray set. I am very happy with this profile and will continue to profile my own papers. My present color workflow gives me prints that match my monitor. I have tried other canned profiles from a few sources and I am just not pleased with them.

Perhaps profiling your own papers could solve a couple of your problems.

Are you suggesting iPF5100 profiles as a solution for my iPF6100 printer?

And for the iPF6100, I found on your web site profiles for paper I don't use, and none for the Canon media I mentioned in my message.

Oh, I'm SURE that making my own profiles (or purchasing custom ones) would solve my problems. And I'll more than likely end up going that route, as I did with my Epson printers. But...

The hype everyone at Canon told me was that with THEIR papers, with this printer, I should NOT need to get custom profiles as the results would be SO GOOD. And that's what's so frustrating!

Not only can I not get profiles for the only Canon media I have been able to source in Canada, but the other papers which might have better support cannot be located through any of the suppliers. Even the top guy at Canon Canada gave me the name of a company to try for paper and they only had what I reported in my message. Nothing else. Nor did they have any experience with the other Canon papers. Frustrating!

Before giving up on this, I really wanted to try a Canon paper with Canon profiles that they recommend for good results. And I'm so far unable to do that.

If I have to go the route of custom profiles, I'll certainly go with paper I can more easily purchase than the Canon stuff.

First, do you ship paper to Canada?

Second, do you have in stock the Canon 24" papers listed on your site?

Third how about inks for the iPF6100?

Thanks.
