Re: Hidden watermark appears when a print is scanned?

here's another link to an explanation of a way of doing this. That sounds like a new system and probably not in very wide use yet.

I recall that Kodak had something like this in their pro color printing papers at one time. I was based on a similar principle. They included small yellow dots... too faint for human vision to detect, but visible to scanners. I seem to recall however that the Kodak system only worked when scanned with a scanner "trained" to recognize the presence of the Kodak marks. A normal scan/print wouldn't typically show the marks. This is going back a number of years but I seem to recall being asked to scan a print once (legally) where a significant enlargement needed to be made. The resulting scan had fine yellow dots throughout the image. That's where I became aware of this system. I'm not sure if its still in use or not.

Ok, we'll just wait and see what the verdict is. I'll put $10 on BS payable to your favorite charity. Your links all work with specialty inks and/or extreme enlargements. Neither applies in this case.

I had a copier guy tell me that their copier could tell if it was copying money and send the info to the FBI! Yup, more BS. I've owned lots of high-end copiers too.

Hey, Photoshop won't let you edit scans of money. I don't know if it sends anything to anyone on the 'net, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Could this be one for the Mythbusters? Just tell them the watermark is explosive and they'll surely take the case.

Re: Hidden watermark appears when a print is scanned?

I don't know about US money, but I've scanned Cdn. 20s and printed them - it IS legal provided that you follow their guidelines for size. I haven't done any since CS came along, maybe that has changed. Gee, how come the US greenback is the most forged money in the world?

Still, we're way off the topic of prints being copied off a mini lab on a cruise ship. I've got my bet still sitting here. In normal photo use, I've never seen anything that can prevent copying, except Kodak pro paper on a Kodak kiosk scanner (how many of those are still around?)

There was another discussion on preventing copying of data CDs & DVDs on another forum. If there were such an animal, you'd think all the big software & music companies would be using it instead of going after little old ladies for downloading mp3s.
