Kodak 1400 and dry mount

I just ordered a Kodak 1400 and am wondering about any issues with dry mounting prints. In particular I'm considering a Seal 210M dry mount press and am wondering if there's any issues with mounting 1400 prints. I gooogled and found nothing.

Re: Kodak 1400 and dry mount

Don,

I don't know anything about dry mounting in general, and the Seal 210M in particular. However, if the process involves heat, I would be cautious. As you are no doubt aware, the Kodak 1400 is a dyesub printer. As such, the prints are sensitive to heat, as heat is used to transfer the dye from the ribbon to the paper. If you apply too much heat to the image area of the print, the dyes will migrate, causing "smearing" of the image.

There is a page on the Kodak web site that discusses how to safely dry mount a Kodak thermal print. You'll find it at:

Re: Kodak 1400 and dry mount

Don,
I have been using a Seal-Proseal 25 for 3or 4 years now, laminating everything from Epson 4000/ 7800 prints to Kodak 8500 and ML 500 prints without a problem.
I am not familiar with the 1400 but I assume it is similar to the 8500.
Bob is defiantly the best authority on this but I have never had a issue.
The seals come with a factory set temperature but you can get it adjusted if you have issues. I use 24x36 inch 3/16 foam core pouchs with a satin finish and it is wonderful.
I guess it goes to show the great stability of the prints.

Re: Kodak 1400 and dry mount

Thanks Bob,

I suspected it would be ok with care, but thought I ought to check. I hadn't stumbled on the Kodak reference, thanks for the link. Dry mounting can be hazardous with any media if enough care is not taken but it sounds like it should work fine.

Thanks Rob also for confirming your experiences. Since I'm picking up a Seal solely for 1400 prints I wanted to be sure. For my inkjet prints I use a heavy paper so just hinge mount rather than dry mount but I suspect this won't work so well with thinner paper.
