Printing stops with Quadtone RIP on 2200 .....

Hopefully someone here will have a fix. I've posted on the Digital B/W List too (plus the printer forum in dpreview--covering all my bases LOL).

I do a lot of monotone printing and have been reasonably happy with toned prints on my 2200 for the last 2+ years altho' I keep toying with making my 1280 a dedicated b/w printer. However, after reading about the Quadtone RIP, I decided to try it. I dled it, did the processing as instructed in help and printed 5 prints (same image tiff image file) in different curves. All went fine and I was very excited feeling I could find the right curve set for me. Then--came the 6th and the printer will not print. It pulls the paper in, does one pass and then spits it out. I uninstalled, restarted, reinstalled and even the same curve/blend set was there (leads me to believe that it didn't uninstall everything). I did a debug (got the right windows), took that off and tried again. I brought up the spooling and watched as I hit print. It spools to the printer but the file almost immediately disappears. I don't have a clue what's happening. To be sure it wasn't a printer problem, I printed from PSCS as normal--and it was fine.

Hope someone can tell me what to do because I think this is my answer for b/w printing and I was prepared to send my shareware amount via paypal. I haven't seen anyone else mentioning this problem.

Diane B.

Re: Printing stops with Quadtone RIP on 2200 .....

Well, if it is any comfort, my setup occasionally does the same (which no other printer driver has ever done), only the spitting-out luckily occurs before any ink has hit the paper. It IS a bl--y nuisance, and I donīt have any explanation. Every time it happens, I stop the printer driver. purge the printing queue, turn the printer off, then on, restart the driver, load the paper, and print again from PS. That (plus a frightening amount of inspired swearing) always does the trick for me.

Re: Printing stops with Quadtone RIP on 2200 .....

Thanks Per. This seems to be totally related to the RIP and not the driver. I uninstalled, deleted the Qadtone RIP folder including the log and the bin folder, downloaded a new copy of the RIP, installed and all is well. I should have come back and explained this. Also--someone on the Digital B/W Print maillist point out to me that I didn't have the newest version so and uninstall and reinstall is called for this morning so I don't encounter this again (I hope). BTW--the problem is that there was nothing in the queue--the file could disappear almost immediately--but the printer would work directly out of PSCS. I've printed with my 2200 for over 2 years and had really good luck with the drivers (upgraded at least once)--but this RIP didn't get along with something LOL--now it appears to do so.

I know this may seem overly basic, but are you sure the image is correctly placed on the page template? Can't say this has ever happened to me, so I have no other idea.

Re: Printing stops with Quadtone RIP on 2200 .....

No, Chuck, thatīs not it (for me, at least). First, after that exercise with stopping, purging, and restarting, the very same PS settings do produce a print. Second, by now Iīve done quite a lot of prints with both PSCS and earlier versions, and this has never happened with anything else than QTR.

Dianeīs observation about updating gives me a lot of hope; Iīm still running the original version as first installed.

And, to put things in the proper perspective, for me this is only a small occasional nuisance, not a major problem. Even as is, QTR is a major step towards producing B/W inkprints that are rivalling my very best silver prints from the "smelly dungeon" days. Iīm even tempted to write "the final step"...
