Newbie question, Matte or Gloss?

Have agonized over which is better, your professional opinions appreciated as far as general rule of thumb.

Thanks,
John

Re: Newbie question, Matte or Gloss?

I was just trying to make the point that this is very much a matter of personal preference, style, presentation, etc. so I'm not sure what's to be gained by taking a poll unless more specifics are involved, like what printer you use, types of images, etc. I currently use a 2200 so only print matte. With my 1270 I only printed glossy as mattes are pretty poor with it.

Re: Newbie question, Matte or Gloss?

This is not a poll, I am trying to gain knowledge based on the opinions (you can call it personal preference, style, presentation, etc if you wish) of professionals I respect. I use a Canon i950 with a profile by www.ddisoftware.com and use only Canon paper and ink. My shots are normally people but occasionally landscape. I see more detail on the gloss, but the matte has richer color and would like to know what the pros think.

Re: Newbie question, Matte or Gloss?

I got my Epson 9600 a little over a year ago. I wanted to make prints that looked as 'photographic' as I could. So - I got the PhotoBlack ink and some Epson Premimum Luster paper. Bad choice! The 'bronzing' effect was so bad, to my taste, that I very quickly changed to Matte Black and Epson enhanced Matte paper. These prints don't look like photographs but I am much much much happier with the look I have now than the 'bronzed' prints on the so called 'photo' paper.

Until Epson or someone else can make a photo paper and/or ink combination that doesn't 'bronze' I will stick with matte paper and matte ink.

Re: Newbie question, Matte or Gloss?

John,

Maybe you can help me. I am an amateur digital photographer who would like to possibly open a small shop. I have been looking into Canon products lately. Right now, I like the i960 printer and the Powershot G5. Do you have any thoughts? I know you at least have experience with the i950 printer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Keith
