| | | Canon i9100 and Ilford Classic Paper Hi,
I am using the Canon i9100 and have very good results with Canon PPP paper. I am considering switching to the Ilford Classic paper range (both pearl and glossy), however, because it is (a) less susceptible to fading and (b) cheaper. Unfortunately, the resin coat of the Ilford paper produces pooling with my i9100. Hence the following questions:
- What is your experience with Ilford Classic and Canon printers? What settings do you use?
- How do you deal with pooling? In particular, I have heard that slowing down the computer works. What programs do people use to do this?
OK, many thanks for your help,

| | | Re: Canon i9100 and Ilford Classic Paper I have used Ilford Galerie Smooth Gloss with good results on my Canon. But if the paper you are referring to doesn't absorb the ink properly, don't use it. I quit using Kodak glossy paper because it didn't absorb the Canon ink; it would just sit on the surface of the paper and never really dried properly (you could wipe it off with a light finger touch 24 hours later). If an ink/paper combination aren't compatible, trying to manually slow down the print speed isn't going to help. You're still going to get very bad print quality and the ink won't dry properly. |

| | | Re: Canon i9100 and Ilford Classic Paper Hi Jonathan,
thanks for your answer. I should have been clearer - the problem you describe (i.e. ink not sticking to paper) fortunately is not a problem for me. The ink 'sticks' to the paper without problems.
What I get is pooling which basically makes the print look grainier than it should be. And it is a pain/shame to shoot in velvia but have your prints look like some 400 film. This, I understand, is due to the Classic range's swellable-polymer coating that takes more time to absorb ink. Since the Canon printer is reasonably fast (and you cannot control two-way passing etc. in the driver - how annoying is that!) it doesn't give the ink enough time to absorb, hence the pooling.
Still looking for a solution :-).
All the best,

| | | Re: Canon i9100 and Ilford Classic Paper I have found that if you use the transparency setting and you profile for said setting, you will not get pooling and the results are very good.I have the 9000,950 and 965 printers and when using Classic Gloss the results are really good, the driver won't let you go tp the finest setting but you won't notice the difference in output!
I can give a profile for my 960/5 Ilford Classic Gloss for transparency setting to try if wanted.

| | | Re: Canon i9100 and Ilford Classic Paper On the road we have been using the canons with success for over a year (S-900,S-9000,I-950). We found that the Canon pro paper fades within 1 year and is more prone to scratches, luckily we only use a few sheets! So far the Epson PGPP provides the best of both world (feel and durability), it can be put directly in an envelop, is very stable and doesn't look cheap. When we print from the web (at the office) we used to use the same printers with the Ilford Classic pearl , as it is supposed the be the more stable media for inkjets. It is a very good paper but takes forever to dry (20 mins. minimum, 24 hours is better). We never had problems, just using a personnal touch to the canon driver (less yellow, a bit more density). We recently bought an Epson 7600 for all our in house work, we have been using it for the last 2 weeks, and this baby rocks with it's Ultrachrome inks and 24 inches carriage !!! (already 200 ft of Epson semi-mat paper and some vinyl media have gone through it without one single reject !!! We are confident that our "on the road" rig provides the best result for the money speed and durability though we heard that dye subs are effective too .... | | | Re: Canon i9100 and Ilford Classic Paper I would keep my eye on Ilford's site to see if they update their recommended ink settings page. I have the S9000, and I have used both Classic and Smooth successfully; I do let the Classic to dry about five minutes prior to moving from printer, just to be on the safe side. The enclosed sheet in the box has the recommended settings, but I can't find any for the i9100. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
