I was under the impression that CS2 was the earliest version allowed to upgrade to CS5.

Ok. I'll try that. But, the files all have the same sizes, so that does give me pause.

just to try to derail the topic back to this off post point...

Have you looked at Jalbum? I've had LR since v1, and used v2 and v3, and find the albums sorely lacking... Jalbum is the tool I use when I want to put up a "non store front" album (although it does that too).
