3D Photography

Does anyone have experience creating 3D photos? What software or hardware did you use? How did people need to view them to see the 3D effect? Did the result really look like 3D photos like the old ViewMaster photos? Are there any companies who can create a ViewMaster reel to be used in a ViewMaster viewer? Has any photographer actually marketed this service to the public and what was the response?

Thanks,

Mark Madere

Re: 3D Photography

Hi Mark,

I used to own the View-Master Personal Camera and have made VM 3D reels. You can find the View-Master Camera, cutter and reels for sale on e-bay.
Another older stereo format is the Stereo Realist camera which made stereo pairs that were larger, better quality and could be viewed the Realist Viewer. There are several stereo enthusiasts on the net including a subsection of the Photographic Society of America that are still active.

Here is a link to get you started:

Re: 3D Photography

I've just been talking with Brian May (the guitarist from Queen, author, astrophysicist, and all around great guy) about just that subject. He's just published a book of stereo imagery, as a matter of fact. He's got some stuff online: BRIAN'S SOAPBOX

Move your camera a little between two shots of a stationary subject and voila, you have created input for a stereogram.

You can organize the images side by side so that you can view them with crossed eyes, or flipped the other way for people who can move their eyes the other way (I can't).

Here's an image I did the other day of my computer. Cross your eyes to superimpose the two images and see the 3D effect.
