PS and Memory

I recently upgraded my RAM to 8GB of 667MHz RAM, up from 4.

On starting up PS, it says there is 3072MB (3GB) available memory. There's no way a freshly started system is using 5GB.

The "About this Mac" dialog recognises the 8GB.

Any thoughts?

Sure. Photoshop on the Mac is a 32-bit application. It can’t address more than about 3.5 GB of RAM. You should probably read this.

Re: PS and Memory

Thanks for that, This is the first time I've really paid much attention to RAM and PS, as I've previously used a Powerbook maxed out with RAM, so there wasn't any movement on that.

Re: PS and Memory

Photoshop CS5 may turn out to be a 64-bit application on the Mac, which could drastically rewrite the best practices for performance optimization. That's probably at least a year away, however.
