I've installed PS over the years and never had an issue...till now.
I've got a copy of 7 from way back. But CS4 won't upgrade from 7 (so i've heard. I've not tried that).
My legit, activated, in use version is an upgrade I downloaded from Adobe from 7 to CS3 over a year ago. It is running under XP Pro.
I have a copy of CS3e (not legit). It will install and run.
Iv'e a copy of CS3 mastersuite (not legit) It will install and run.
I got a new machine that will be taking over the editing work. I want to put CS4 on it. It's Vista 64 - my first experience with Vista in any way.
OK, since i can't Upgrade from 7 to 4, I figured I'd throw one of teh non-legit (but i have serial numbers and can register it) on the new machine. Used to be all the upgrade (or any upgrade) wanted to see was a registered copy on the machine.
I start CS4 upgrade from the CD (i paid extra to get a CD this time) and it asks for the serial number of the upgrade, it accepts it. Then a second window pops up that says it sees nothing 'old' on there, please enter a serial number. I have 2 of them - one from the CS3 installation on that machine (running, registered) and one from my legit version (which lists it as 'activated').
None of these other copies are running.
It will not accept any serial number I type in.
Now I can 'deactivate' the CS3 copy i'm using on the other machine, but I still need to work on there until I can get the new unit up and broke in, HDs installed, new vid card and dual monitors...and I've never deactivated an adobe product to know what may, or may not, happen.
Does adobe offer any support on their products? I don't see a damned thing with their software!

The Photoshop CS4 upgrade wants to see an activated version installed before it will upgrade. The problem with the Adobe Suites is that you cannot upgrade just one component, you must buy the upgrade for the entire suite.
It looks like you will have to install your legit version on the machine you wish to upgrade. The Adobe license allows for installation on two machines as long as they are not used simultaneously.
Yes, it is stupid and insanity-inducing. I actually purchased a new full license to CS3 16 months ago because I didn't want to deal with sorting out the upgrades again. For now, I plan to sit out CS4.

the issue turned out to be I needed the serial number of the CS3 I am running. What's the issue? You can't get the serial number from CS3 - it only gives you teh first 20 digits. I had to find my box that the CD came in - that had all the numbers including the last 4 that are not displayed in CS3!
