Archive and Catalog Programs

I have upgraded to Extensis Portfolio 8.5 and have had the same bad experience I had with 8.1. It closes unexpectedly, crashes, loses files and is, in general, not very good for my use.

All I want to do is archive and catalog 156,000 images and search by file name. I want to make small thumbnails I can take on the laptop. I don't want a really huge preview file.

Any suggestions on what will work reliably on a PC with XP and Vista?

Have you evaluated Thumbs Plus? It isn't sexy, but it is venerable, proven software. And it's cheap.

Microsoft Expression Media is still quite good despite some griping by us old-time users [we are more miffed about the slow development than the actual program].

IDimager is very good but has a steep learning curve. It's built upon open standards like SQL and XMP. To my knowledge it is currently the only application making full use of XMP.
