Photo Mechanic vs. IView Media Pro

I apologize if this has been covered before, but I need some advice on image cataloging/ editing software. Do any of you have an opinion on Photo Mechanic vs. IView media Pro? Are there many differences between the two programs? I take it that Photo Mechanic must be pretty popular since it has it's own forum on this web site, but I don't want to use that as a measure of performance or features. Any input would be much appreciated...

Re: Photo Mechanic vs. IView Media Pro

PM has its own forum here because there are so many posts re PM, It's also possible that because it sponsors or advertises on RobGalbraith.com, it doesn't need to run its own forums on its own site.

PM and iView are different types of program. PM is a browser, and other members of that family are Breezebrowser and Bridge. iView is a cataloguing database, like Portfolio, ACDSee, iMatch, Elements Organizer. A browser looks at files in the file system and tends to be used early in the workflow, when you're sorting out keepers and entering info like copyright, description etc. Cataloguing databases don't look directly at the file system but at records in their database. The records include text such as the description that are imported from the files or entered in the database, and they also include thumbnails, meaning the app doesn't need to refer to the file itself. As a result they're much faster when you're trying to find files scattered across multiple drives, folders, discs etc and when more files are involved. In other words, comparing PM and IView is like comparing apples and oranges.

Re: Photo Mechanic vs. IView Media Pro

So essentially with a browser you input the data, and with the cataloging (IView) software you find your data - yes?

Re: Photo Mechanic vs. IView Media Pro

Well the key difference is that with the browser you look at the files themselves, while with catalogues you look at database records that represent the files. In workflow terms your view tends to be true, but you can also add metadata to the files once they're in the catalogue.

Hi Glenn,

IMHO amongst digital asset management apps iView MediaPro has the best support for RAW camera formats.
