Re: Photo Mechanic vs. IView Media Pro

PM has its own forum here because there are so many posts re PM, It's also possible that because it sponsors or advertises on RobGalbraith.com, it doesn't need to run its own forums on its own site.

PM has its own forum on RobGalbraith.com because the original forum (Photo Browsers) was completely overwhelmed with posts regarding Photo Mechanic. I don't believe that our advertising had anything to do with it.

Well the key difference is that with the browser you look at the files themselves, while with catalogues you look at database records that represent the files. In workflow terms your view tends to be true, but you can also add metadata to the files once they're in the catalogue.

Hey,
But while you are stating that with Catalogues, you look at data base as opposed to the actual file, you stil get to see a thumbnail or preview representation of the file yes? I'm a bit puzzled by the statement.

Re: Photo Mechanic vs. IView Media Pro

Those thumbnails and previews are images stored within the database, having been extracted from the image file at the initial cataloguing stage or by subsequent updating.

With a browser, you are looking directly at the file itself and it's a live view, often sped up by the browser referring to a cached version.

So if you update the file, eg making it greyscale, the browser will show the updated image while the database shows the thumbnail and preview that were previously extracted. The upside of this is greatly increased performance of cross folder/drive searches so you're no longer restricted by having to know which folder contains the images matching your search criteria.

Re:Photo Mechanic vs. IView Media Pro vs. Aperture

Hello, One of this forum's user had reported that Iview Media Pro had shrunk his raw files down to thumbnail size. Since that report I had lost interest in Iview Media Pro and started to use a low tech CD catalog software to track down the content of multiple hard drives. Now, it's getting out of control and I'd want to make the task more efficient and obtain previews without having to plug the external HD containing the files. Can anyone recommend the - safe - use of Iview Media pro for this task ? Aperture seemed to be the tool to have but the archiving / vault thing does not seem to handle catalogs on external media.

Any help appreciated.

Virgile.

Hi Virgile,

Yikes! I never heard that one.

iView MediaPro 3 is due today. One new option is to save 1280px previews for offline media. Otherwise in MediaPro 2 you can build large 640px thumbnails for the offline stuff.

Thats becuase Iview is reading the emmbeded JPEG which on older NEF files is small. On newer cameras there are large previews. If you want you old NEF files to have large previews then you need to drop the folder of images onto the file in the Nikon View/Preview gen directory. This will emmbed large previews into your old NEF files.

Or select all the NEF files in Iview and select Rebuild Item

Hope that helps.
