can't allocate secondary scratch disk

I'm having a problem trying to allocate an external drive (G4 Mac with external FW hard drive) as the secondary scratch disk. It does not show up when I click the appropriate tab. Can anyone lend a hand?

Apart from my thougts that it isn't a good idea to have an external drive for scratch disk (I have an internal drive with a seperate partition of 35 Gb that is only in use as first scratchdisk and I left the other fields blank, this is working fine) the disks should appear in the fields.
I asume you are working with MacOsX 10.3 and PSCS? In my case all the disks, internal and external that are visible in the Mac Finder show up in the scratch disk preference fields

Unfortunately, I can't see the external drive in the scratch disk preference fields, yet it's on the desktop. (using iBook, so internal drive not an option).

Steve, if you are able to back up the contents of the external drive try to format the external drive with your IBook install disk, don't know if its working but it is the only option I can think of, maybe someone else has a better idea
