HTML Code to Prevent Image Copying from Site?

I recently had some images stolen from my portfolio site & they were used without my permission on a corporate website. Is there an HTML code that prevent people from copying photos from my website? I realize that everything can be bypassed, but anything would help - even if it only makes "saving" / downloading my images harder for the most basic user.

-Paul

PS: The main thing that I want to defeat is the simple Windows act of right-click>"save image as"
I am looking for the code snippet that I can place in my HTML-based wesbite that I designed w/FP2000.

Also, any pointers on pursuing copyright violation is welcome!

Re: HTML Code to Prevent Image Copying from Site?

Firstly, understand that no code stops someone determined to copy a picture of a web site. All you can do is make it less easy to do, but they can always get a screen grab. So put a copyright notice on the images, and put your copyright info into the jpeg file's metadata. That said....

Stick this in the head part of the HTML document. It stops Internet Explorer's <META HTTP-EQUIV="imagetoolbar" CONTENT="no">

Second, in the image img tag, put this: oncontextmenu="return false;" - it stops the right click working.

You can also find javascripts that give annoying messages on right click. I wouldn't use them unless you're careful to restrict them to just the image - there are good reasons, other than theft, why people might want to right click elsewhere on the page. So avoid annoying visitors.

I am new to this, kindly provide spoon-feeding ;-) Kindly provide an example of an image tag with this code properly punctuated and positioned?

Thanks,
Paul

Re: HTML Code to Prevent Image Copying from Site?

Thanks for the Java Script link. I just tested it & it works great. Very elegant solution.

Re: HTML Code to Prevent Image Copying from Site?

So what if I want to right click to copy your name and contact details? That's why I wrote that you should be careful that your solution (and remember it can easily be bypassed) should disable the right click only for the image. See other posting.

Re: HTML Code to Prevent Image Copying from Site?

As in this:

<img oncontextmenu="return false;" src="pics/photos/grt_ct_1810.jpg" alt="Copyright MyName - British Museum" border="0" height="300" hspace="0" vspace="0" width="401">

Just like the script, this oncontextmenu="return false;" disables the right click for the vast majority of visitors and is a more elegant solution nowadays.
