Black and White techniques

What are your favorite techniques for turning a color digital image into a black and white image? I have been using an action created by Fred Miranda. You can see it at Fred's website.

Any thoughts on how to get the best black and white images? (Printing is another discussion. . . although I don't miss mixing chemicals, etc., I miss the results I knew how to get in a darkroom)

We have a number of color to B&W routines in PhotoKit which you can download and play with to your heart's content for 7 days. There are also a lot more effects and corrections in the set (Sharpening, blurring, etc)
