looking for a pixel blending brush

I have finally put my Corel Photopaint 9 in the bin and now trying to get to grips with photoshop 7.

In photopaint, there is a neat blending brush which picks up the color on adjacent pixels each side and blends them together. Its a really good trick for smoothing masks (sorry selections) after you have flattened the image, and need to feather some parts and not others.

Does this make sense? To make it simple, imagine a screen split into 2 - black on one side and white on the other. What i'm looking for in photoshop is a brush or tool than I can run down the seperation line and see grey when magnified.

If I'm reading you correctly, you want something that will work as a paintbrush, but give you a gaussian blur effect.

On the toolbar on the left side of your screen, click on the box shaped like a water droplet. That is the blur tool. Select your brush, select your opacity (the intensity of the effect), and click/paint away!
