PS7 And File Extensions.

On both my XP machines, after working on a file, and saving it as a different format, PS7 adds the new file extension to the old file extension. Example: Open cat.jpg, save it as a tiff. File is now called cat.jpg.tiff.
Open it again, save it as a psd. It is now called cat.jpg.tiff.psd.
This happens to any file, even a Photoshop sample. If I rename the file, then save it, all is well. PS7 is treating the old file extension as if it were part of the file name. It does not happen in PS6, Adobe has no answer, & it has put a real crimp in my workflow. ??????????????????????
