Borders

I have problems with aligning my borders around my pictures. My workflow is to edit my pictures then I increase the size of the canvas. I then drag the square making tool and use strokes with 1 pixel thickness to add a pin stripe around the frame. How can I align the border so it all fits uniform around the picture. See on www.fineimages.co.uk. Samples then portraiture 2. Look at the ist and last picture, as you can see its not equal and relative to the edge of the picture.
Gadge.

Re: Borders

Gadge,

I looked at the images you pointed at I'm not sure why you wanted us to look at both the first and last image. I can see the uneven border in the last image but the first image has no margin within the border, does it?

Anyway, getting even width borders is simple in PS. You simply have to ensure that your original image is of even sized width and height. Then when you increase the canvas size, increase by even size. And when you're ready to add the 1 pixel stroke frame, just do "Select All" and stroke the selection.

Hope this helps.

Re: Borders

Gadge,

Can I suggest an alternative technique. This can be recorded as an action for easy re-use:

1. Set background colour to white
2. Increase canvas size with relative checked by number of pixels required for white edge.
3. Set background colour to black
4. Increase canvas size with relative checked for number of pixels required for black edge

This has the advantage over using stroke in that it will work on 8- and 16-bit images.

Re: Borders

Thanks Roger, great suggestion. Do you know if there is a way to put a drop shadow on the "first" border using this method?

Dan,

Well, I didn't before your question, so it was a challenge. This was the method I worked out. It requires layers, so will only work with 8-bit images.

1. Open image
2. Duplicate background layer
3. Set background colour to white
4. Select original background layer
5. Increase canvas size with relative checked by enough to include shadow
6. Select background copy (dupe layer)
7. Layer>Layer Style>Drop shadow - fiddle with settings as required
8. Set background colour to black
9. Select background layer
10. Increase canvas size again

There may be an easier way, but this works and could be recorded.

Regards,

Roger

Re: Borders

I think this may help if i've read right. to get black borders around a pic:
1. select all the image (ctrl+a/apple+a)
2. go into the Edit menu bar and select stroke.
3. Check the colour is black and choose how thick u want the line ( i use 10 pixels)
4. Hit ok and there u have it.

To put a white border around this simply go into canvas size, and leaving the grey square in the centre add the required amount to each side, so for a 1 inch border add 2 inches to the figure given.

Any probs let me know
