The original was an image of stacked PVC pipes, looking at their ends. The pipes were black, but the edges of the ends were red, and some pipes were nestled inside of larger ones.
Use of Threshold and gradient fills in CS3, coupled with a bit of warping, produced what I hope feels like a 3-dimensional if not disorienting effect.
