Without wanting to appear to put up a facile argument, I would say that if you have to ask the question then the answer is probably no, you do not really need a 1D. Every tool has specific uses and if you want bullet-proof reliability in all conditions, with the ability to focus rapidly and capture any subject at over 8 frames a second, then the 1D is the tool.

I don't feel that you can really better the 1D for use as a camera for news gathering/documentarywork/or live music gigs. It is an extremely versatile and responsive camera. Mate it with some of Canon's outstanding primes (the 135mm f2.0L comes to mind) and the 1D camera would be a bit less less heavy to tote around than if it was wearing the 70~200mm f2.8L lens.

I use both the 16~35mm and 70~200mm non IS zooms and I dont mind the weight of the camera and lens combination and find it helpful for stability, when using the camera hand-held. (I grew up photographically carrying Nikon F2AS/MB1/MD2 combinations around so the 1D is well within my comfort zone and ergonomically it is a delightful tool to hold and use)

The weather protection may also be an important issue... I have found shooting from under a very good quality rain cape (Kata) is right royal PITA and prefer not to be hampered by a cape. The shutter cycle life may not be an issue for you if you would want to change a camera very frequently but if you want them to last (and who wouldn't, given the resolution of the 5D) then a 1 series may be a better solution with its designed in 200,000 actuation shutter life.

regards,
Jeff
