Re: What happens if the laptop dies

Glenn,

You want an alternative storeage media for the time when your PC dies. Yes?

I think it has been suggested above - but I'll repeat it anyway.

Buy an external stand alone device like the Nixvue. For sextra afety buy more than one and more than one brand.

The battery capacity of the Nixvue is a joke - but you can re-charge it and also run it off external AA cells.

Glenn
get an external independent storage medium BEFORE your laptop dies.
If you dont have one and your laptop dies, then you are f****d.
Is that simple enough?

Hi Glenn,
I guess I'm luckier than Kara as I have an Archos that works well! I would recommend one. The plus side is that you can check your images have transferred OK by looking at previews (I think its only jpegs that you can actually see), and you can connect it to your laptop to backup the images too.

Edmond - that's why I would recommend them IF mine (or one of 'mine' *sigh*) worked. Direct download, 20Gb storage and the ability to view the jpgs (not raw) and then once you have a computer the ability to download would be perfect.

still waiting on delivery of replacement #4.....

Re: What happens if the laptop dies

The independent Hard Disk based backup device is definitely the easiest way to go, however, if you really need to get a PC up and working the best way to do it is as follows. This will only work if you use a windows PC, if you are travelling to remote destinations you may wish to consider switching to a Windows PC rather than Mac given their gerater availability in the regions that you are travelling.

1...Take your original laptop and then using Norton Ghost (from symantec) build a back up image of your main drive (operating system and applications). Keep the discs created and the Norton Ghost recovery disc with you when you travel.

2...If your PC should die, then go into a local shop and purchase a replacement laptop. Recover your original PC environment from the backup CDs you are carrying. You should now have a direct replacement for your original PC. (You may be able to get a insurance to cover the cost of a replacement laptop if it is covered by theft/breakage etc...).

This is a real belts and braces mechanism to get back PC functionality quickly if you are out in the field (will take about an hour to recover your environment to the new PC). You will need to keep the original laptop if you have information stored on it that you need to recover when you get home.

you no longer have a computer
you are in Myanmar
you have 20 days left to shoot

some options :
- suicide
- enjoy Myanmar beach and cocotrees and forget about the rest of the world
- use your second (spare) PC , but having to PC (or Macs) just double the chance to have one broken...
- use film and be carefull not to have them stolen or open under daylight
- shoot in studio, preferably close to a PC/Mac dealer, and not on a Sunday

no barrier language AFAIU(nderstand), just a limit with technics

Re: What happens if the laptop dies

Brief addition on the portable storage part of this thread...

I have been using 30 gig Trippers (approximately $260 USD at www.insidecomputer.com) for over a year with 100% reliability. Like other portable disks, the internal battery's a joke, but Inside Computer also was including a battery holder that acts as an external power supply. It holds 4 AA batteries which then makes the power issue moot; you can easily have enough juice for the entire trip.

Good luck!
