Price for photos in national magazine?

We covered a sailing regatta several months ago and a national sailing magazine has approached us for photos. They are wanting one or two A4 sizes photos for one issue.

Having never sold an image to a magazine before, I'm unsure what to charge. I certainly don't want to give it to them (which is what they were hinting at initally) however I don't want to lose a potential sale either. Is it wise to offer photos in return for advertising space?

Any ideas?

Re: Price for photos in national magazine?

It really depends on the magazine and it's circulation. I just had 8 images in a Washington Times magazine and was paid a flat $US500 for the lot. It's not like I was on assignment for the publication, I just had images on file that they needed. Modern Drummer, which is the biggest drum magazine in the world pays $US160 for a small photo. I do work for educational magazines that pay a flat $US300 as a day rate. I find it funny, but most times offensive when a national magazine asks me for a free image, kind of like "Well, it could be good for your book." I don't need anything in my book that bad. We invest a lot of time and a whole lot of money in what we do and should be paid accordingly. Perhaps a call to the magazines art department might give you an idea of what they pay. All magazines pay different fee's and when a magazine doesn't have a flat fee per image, it's up to us to negotiate and I base my asking price on circulation.

Re: Price for photos in national magazine?

Greetings Aussie Girl,

There is a great reference book, published every year, that lists the photo paid prices for darn near every published magazine, paper, gallery, you name it.

I use the book like a price "bible". Try to get a hold of a recent copy, if not for this one project just to have on file for the future.

"Photographer's Market", published by F & W Publications, 4700 East Galbraith Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45236 USA

web-site: www.writersmarket.com

International Standard Serial Number: 0147-247X
International Standard Book Number: 1-58297-121-8

Best of Luck,

Rick

Go to the Editorial Photographers web site and use their estimator. It takes into account circulation, repro size, etc.

Don't give anything away.
