Great Idea

I just noticed this addition to the forums and thought I'd give it a whirl.

I am a long-time community newspaper, photographer, reporter, editor, page designer, Webmaster and the like ... currently freelancing while looking for a full-time journalism or P.R. position.

I hope we can get have some good discussions on photojournalism.

I wonder how many of you out there combine your talents in news coverage - such as by photographing and writing.

Re: Great Idea

is there such a thing as a grammar corrector that based off AP style? The one that comes with ms word thinks everything should either be for school or for a business letter. As a photographer, and not a writer, I need all the help I can get.

Re: Great Idea

The Word-based grammer checker can be scary, but it has caught a few things on my end.

I've never heard of an AP-based checker.

I think an AP-based AP Stylebook overlay program would be cool. It would be neat to run over really poorly styled copy and see all the red highlights!

Re: Great Idea

Just like it seems there will never be a spell check in Photoshop file info, there probably will never be an AP style based grammar checker piece of software.

The reason is that the Stylebook is published every year and it's more about particular word usage than strings of words used together. The gist of AP style is to use the least amount of words in a photo caption to completely describe the content of the photo.

You can see about 10,000 AP photos, with captions, on the Yahoo NewsPhotos web site by simply searching "AP".

Re: Great Idea

Yeah I do both (shoot and write) and haven't actually kept up well with my AP Style since college (like ten years ago!) but unless you are working for certain publications, a lot of publications don't require AP style.

I do like it for it's conciseness and try to leverage that when I write. I still can't remember... is it around or about for time? I think around (tip was to remember clocks are round) - anyone care to enlighten me?

Re: Great Idea

Hello everybody -- great Idea --- I got into photography more by accident than design - and my primary income is still mainly journalistic. I've been a feature and travel writer for a while and some time ago I was asked to take some pictures on my trip as well (I've always been keen on photography and used to take loads in a private capacity)and submit them with my piece. I was lucky enough to have some colleagues at the magazine who helped me with the photographic bit --- mainly in prepping.
Get to do a lot more photography these days and some largish poster size prints as well -- mainly for travel and tourism industry.
Digital Photography has been fantastic for me.

Re: Great Idea

I still have to convince myself to write "around" each time, because I think "about" sounds better.
