Sounds to me like he couldn't be relied upon to follow orders. Listen to the audio of the slide show. Sounds like he insisted on going around the orders each time. I don't blame the Marines. They can't trust anyone who doesn't follow orders. That's what got him disembedded, not taking war pictures.

Don't screw with the Marines.
