Photoshop Challenge

Here is a link to my Raw file from a shot taken in November from Lake Louise in Banff Alberta:

I took this shot with my Canon 20D and kit lens. You will need to correct the horizon and crop/fix the picture to eliminate/reduce vignetting.

This is by no means a great picture. I am curious as to how others would approach it.

Location: Chateau Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
Date: Saturday, 8 November 2008
Time: 13:23
Aperture: ƒ5.6
Duration: 1/250 second
Focal Length: 17 mm
ISO: 400
Mode: AV
Exposure Compensation: +1 1/3

Re: Photoshop Challenge

Not bad... Seems very peaceful.

To me this image seems to want oodles of sharpness and a lot of color saturation.

Re: Photoshop Challenge

Noel,

Very good!

How did you eliminate the vignetting? I just cropped it out.

I have included my version below. It's a bit different.

Similar to your post, if you click on the picture, you will be taken to a larger version.

Re: Photoshop Challenge

Nice work, Kevin. I like that your cloud on the right seems more 3D than mine.

Re: Photoshop Challenge

While I like my cloud, I think your photo has a better overall mood to it.

Any hints on removing the vignetting?

Re: Photoshop Challenge

I add vignetting to a lot of portraits, so removal would be the opposite. I find this works a lot better than burning:

To remove vignette: Take lasso tool (reg, not magnetic) and draw a quick oval covering over 70% of image. I do it with a trackball so getting it exact is not needed. Ctrl +Shft + I to inverse selection. Right click, feather 250 px. or max amount. Ctrl + L for levels, then lighten amount needed. A little pratice and it's a great way to quickly lighten or darken areas that need it with a gentle touch.

I just did this on a sunset photo with a B&G foreground. Sometimes, you'll want to lasso a greater or lesser area to give it a double hit.

If you do these a lot, make an action.

When I get some spare time, I'll work on the sample. Problem with all of this is that it's a personal taste issue. I have a personal dislike for oversharpening or oversaturation although I think I'm becoming a minority.

Re: Photoshop Challenge

Thank you Doug for the anti-vignetting work flow. I understood your message.

And I agree, everything is personal taste. Some like to desaturate everything except for item of interest/focus.
