My "rainbow" as it were.
Sorry John, how about this? (I started with your top image again.) Rainbow in transition area should be gone.

This is what I did.

First, create a second layer.

Next, I overlayed Red... Image | Apply Image and what you see below.

Now, I want to restrict the red layer to everything except Skittles. Because everything else is brighter (except shadows), I can restrict its application to bright blues. Skittles is very low in blue. So I use the "Blend If" sliders...double click on the layer.

The shadows and Skittles remain unaffected, and your wall has the red layer applied to it in all three channels. That is, the bright areas will be neutral. The transition areas that are similar to that of Skittles still might be affected. Without having the original image (w/o adjustments), it is difficult to nail it. But I think if you play with the channels, you might be able eliminate your rainbow.

Does that work?

It looks good Kevin, and that's a neat technique! I hadn't thought of that before. I have a stack of Photoshop training books, and it amazes me how much more there's still out there that can be done.

Thanks!

You need to play with the full-sized image to get it where you want it. But I think by manipulating the channels (along with layer masks), you should be able to achieve the effect that you are after.

Good luck.
