Arrow Vote for Photo Contest Topics!

Are the photo contests done?

A few months ago I checked every day and there were no announcements, so I got tired of checking. Then I returned and saw we were back on track -- but in the meantime I'd missed a contest.

So I started keeping tabs on it again, and again nothing's been going on.

Are the contests done?

Re: no new photo contests?

Chris,

I'll do you a deal. I'll stir up the contest every second contest if you do the ones in between. I did the last one, so it's your turn.

The problem appears to be that drew is busy, and he hasn't delegated the contest job properly, so we have a contest director, but Drew still calls the shots. Drew is busy, so it doesn't happen like clockwork as it should.

Mike.

Re: no new photo contests?

Mike is correct, the forum belongs to Drew and he decides when the contests take place.

In the past difficulties arose from being able to get sponsors for the prizes awarded to the winner. There has also been declining participation in the contests.

We started in February with a contest theme and this attracted a few more participants. I am hoping that the arrival of Spring will awaken the creativity in more of the members to go out and take some new photos.

Of course, you also have us no-talent slobs, who have already submitted anything of worth they have ever taken, so they don't have anything left to submit.

Re: no new photo contests?

We are planning on having an April contest, as it looks like we have a prize other than the usual fare.

Any ideas for a theme this time? We did circles last time.

How about?

Multi-Colored
Octagonal
Birds (or other spring creatures making nests or tending to the young)
Spring related topic
A specific field of photography (for those of us not in that field it will let us stretch our skills a bit)
Any other ideas? There have to be a million possibilities.

Maybe if we make a list of 5 to ten ideas and vote on them we can start with the highest vote getter and just go down the list to the next for each subsequent month, and so on.

If I don't have a "special" prize for the month then we can just go with the default Lifetime Membership or Color Parrot type prize.

This should keep it going and Jerry won't have to wait on me to keep it rolling along.

What do you think?

Re: no new photo contests?

Other Suggestions:

'One Day' Where the photo is taken on a particular day.
Alphabet, where a letter is chosen and photos are submitted that have something to do with it.
Water is always good.
Bokeh.
Movement. (also 'Wind' can be a challenging subject)
One Light Source.
Night Scene.
Technology.
A Bend.
Chaos.
...

As far as the contest is concerned, I think we should publish the dates as far ahead as possible. This could be achieved with a sticky post in the contest area. We have had a discussion about prizes last time, and one of the outcomes of that was to look at the reputation points system, not sure what came of that?

We should also stick to the timetable for ending the entry period and the voting. It sometimes drifts along...

Judging. It's neat to have the current peer review, but I wonder if we should also have a more technical analysis based on composition, exposure etc. It would need to be done by someone with the skills and experience who is impartial. Do we have anyone able and willing to do that? This would open a new facet of the competition, the ability for people to see ways of improving their images, and understanding more of what makes a winning image. Currently, we simply get a win/no-win result, and no constructive feedback.

Mike.
