Re: Sony announces new FF CMOS chip

Zeiss has never actually done the manufactuiring of it's glass. At least not for riflescopes. I once did a in depth study on that. Nikon Zeiss lenses are all manual focus. The ones Sony has are auto focus. One only has to look at images taken with Zeiss lenses to appreciate the result. Don't know how long Zeiss has been making optics, but I'll wager a guess it's longer than Nikon. Sony has been smart. By inlisting the help of other companies that are at the top of their manufacturing quality, Sony has cut years and years of R&D off their product.

Sony's announcement must be really big news, Ken Rockwell sez " it's irrevelent. Doesn't mean a thing. So what? Nikon is still better. Nikon designed it's own sensor and we don't know if Sony made it or not." Sounds to me like he's already scared!

Everybody remember what happened in the super bowl? Anything is possible. Personally I'm pullin fer Sony. I'm still miffed that I bought a D300 for :

1. low light performance
2. Being able to use my extra D2x batteries in the battery pak : ................................... except they in their ultimate wisdom decided not to include the battery cover requiired. Also there evidently is not one in stock anywhere in the known world!

Maybe Sony won't pull those kind of shenanigans.

Re: Sony announces new FF CMOS chip

as long as I've been reading forecasts for camera manufacturers on the internet... the bloody sky has been falling on Nikon.

Re: Sony announces new FF CMOS chip

Bill, I haven't seen anywhere here where anyone is predicting the fall of Nikon. Just discussing what is, what might be, and what is wanted. I have learned a lot from the discussion. I am predominately Nikon myself, owning three cameras and about ten lens. I also own a Canon camera and three lens for it. My studio camera is a Sony, which I am very pleased with. At first chance, I will be ordering another Sony for my flower photography.

It is my belief that a superb lens can make up for a somewhat ho-hum camera. I also believe the Zeiss 24-70 F/2.8 is such a lens.

I just try to use whatever camera is best suited for the job. Try to stay current with technology. Try to take and market the best images I could imagine.

I'm a business person that tries to choose his tools on their individual merits. In my case that just hasn't always been Nikon. Everyone is different. I use what gives me confidence. I have been able to take my photography to another level since I started thinking that way.

Personally I will welcome another major player.
