Fuji S5 vs. Canon 5D question

I've been trying to find decent review on the S5 and can't find much, except comparisions with the D200.

A friend of mine in UK bought an S5 and says the skin tones and dynamic range are the best he's ever seen, but once again, he doesn't shoot Canon.

So, has anyone got both? I'm interested in the S5 becasue it can capture bar codes with the image data which would be fantastic for me. It's also got a few other nice ideas that I could use. But, I can't find real world comparisons with Canon gear that I am now used to.

I'd want to use it for school seniors and T&I, so resolution is not paramount AND I've still got Nikon glass that is just gathering dust anyway. It would be nice to be able to use it for weddings too.

Any thoughts?

Doug

Find a camera store that rents equipement, or even one that will let you spend a few minutes shooting with each. Bring along someone with good skin and some CF cards, and do some test shots.

That's the only way you'll truely know.

Re: Fuji S5 vs. Canon 5D question

Thanks David, but there are no stores that are close enough with enough stock to offer rentals. Testing in a store is not my thing. Been there - done that - a week of full time use is what I'm looking for.

There are many posts on this, just no one that compares what I need yet. I got burned buying the S1 years ago and it got replaced after a few thousand shots.

I'll probably just have to wait a bit.

What software do you use? H&H offers EZEvent for free and they scanner is $195 - you generate the bar codes (kid/class/group, etc) and scan then shoot - it's timed and puts it all together in the software later. Works with any camera.

Thanks Chris, but that software is not a workable solution for me. I have checked it out.

Besides, that is just one part of why I'm interested in the S5. The files I have seen for 'people pictures' have been very interesting. Very few are using it to it's full potential yet.

I actually won an S5 in the Best of Weddings Contest last month in Vegas and have just started playing around with it. So far..I have been very impressed with the skin tones and the dynamic range. It is clearly a camera aimed towards Wedding & portrait photogs.

I believe I saw in another thread that Doug Axford is planning to do just such a comparison. I anxiously await the results!
