| Re: Olympus E-1 Firmware Update I found the E-1 to be an odd mix of features and limitations. I really wanted to like the camera--there is much to like--but it didn't do what I needed it to do for me and I ended up trading it. For example, the size, weight, and build quality were unbeatable--it felt as tough as my Canon 1D at about half the weight, and up to ISO 400 the files were superb (although I sometimes blew highlights even shooting RAW). But the 5MP raw files ended up as a 10MB ORF file--ridiculously large! (This can be overcome by converting them to DNG files with Adobe RAW Converter, which reduces them to approx. 60% of the original size; nonetheless, I thought Olympus should have figured this out beforehand--when I called customer support they hadn't a clue about Adobe RAW Converter, either.) The pro flash wasn't all that hot--it took forever to recyle. OTOH, the glass I had, a 14-54 zoom, was the best zoom I have ever used. Finally, the autofocus just wasn't fast enough, nor did it work well enough in low or low-contrast light. I wish Olympus well with their new generation of DSLR cameras, including the pro model, should we ever actually see it. I miss my E-1 sometimes, and I understand why some users find it to be perfect for their needs, but it just wasn't responsive enough for me. |
