| Re: LEICA DMR OVER 1DSMK11? Here are my current thoughts after trying the DMR for a second time, today - the first time I used a Summilux 50/1.4.
This time I used an obsolete Summicron 90/2.
- I didn't quite hit focus, although I did better than two days ago. I'm not sure I will be able to hit focus in a real-life situation with a live non-posing model and a wide-open lens.
- The old Summicron gave much better skin tone than the new Summilux 50. On a young caucasian woman it was *very* beautiful. On some older and more wrinkled models the wrinkles were harsh. I have a feeling that older lenses might be better for people-shooting with the DMR.
- The DMR is crop frame and the 1Dsx are full-frame ; this does show in terms of finder size and in depth of field control.
- Colour was a bit off (magenta) in spite of custom white balance, both last time and today. Also I think the camera is overexposing slightly.Maybe firmware 1.2 is not so good ?
- COMPARED WITH CANON (1DsII) - the DMR has at least 1/2 stop more latitude each way than my 1DsII, it saves the highlights and speculars, and has much better skin tones, skin color and texture, and SHARPNESS than the 1DsII. Did I say that at ISO 100 outdoors the DMR beats the 1DsII to pieces ?
- COMPARED with CANON (1Ds) - the DMR skin tone is roughly equivalent to my 1Ds, and colour is different but not that much better in the sample I tested, and sharpness does not win either (I'm surprised on both counts). Photographically, the old 1Ds is clearly on a level playing ground compared with the DMR when it comes to portraits. With autofocus sharpness and full-frame plasticity thrown in, the 1Ds at ISO 100 more than matches the DMR.
IN SUMMARY: My feeling is the DMR chops my 1DsII to pieces but is roughly equivalent to my old obsolete 1Ds, in a portrait setting. I guess I'm lucky I didn't sell the 1Ds.
