Newer Storage Media Compatibility for DCS 6xx/7xx?

Hi All.

Just for fun, I tried to run a SanDisk SD 256MB card in my DCS 720x using a "4-in-1 Flash Media Reader / Writer PCMCIA Adapter."

It didn't work -- the camera complained that it was an unknown card type. Couldn't format it, etc. Works fine on my laptop.

So, does this mean that the DCS 6xx/7xx will never function with anything other than Compact Flash and MiniDisk mass storage cards, and the newer media types (e.g. SD) will simply remain unsupported, even when adapters are available?

Also, if anyone can explain why the SD+adapter doesn't work, I'd appreciate it. I would have thought that the adapter presents a common, ATA-like interface to the host (DCS camera), so it wouldn't really matter what the actual storage medium is ...

Thanks,

Maybe a quick phone call to Kodak tech support will give the answer.

How was the SD card formatted in the first place?

If the format of the card itself is bad, there is a chance that the camera will not like it enough to even re-format it.

I've had this happen with all kinds of media.

Try dropping a good format on the SD card (use fat16) from your PC or MAC. Properly eject the card and then try it in the 7xx bodies.

As far as Sandisk goes, there are certain Sandisk cards that just do not work in some cameras.

I tried formatting from a WinXP PC (FAST16 and FAT32), and formatting in the DCS720x. No go.

Have you tried more than one kind of SD-PCMCIA adapter? I've got some single-purpose SD-only adapters here under the brand name of 'Link Depot' (www.link-depot.com) that I bought on ebay for $5 each. They seem to work fine with my 760 and laptop.

Very interesting -- now I don't know which of my two components is the source of the problem -- the adapter or the SD card ... will report back when I have more info.

Hi Chuck.

Does the Link Depot adapter allow you to push the SD card into it so that it's flush, and you can close the door on the 760 when the adapter+SD card are inserted?

Thanks,

Andrew
