Studio layout graphics packages

Curtis Cunningham posted in another forum and included a layout.psd file. Lighting Setup .psd fileDoes anyone know whare I can get something similar, I need to output to publishing resolutions. The one offered by Curtis is only for the web, 75ppi output.

I need to produce cool graphics for inclusion in a book, and wondered if anyone knew of a package that would enable me to do this?

Kindest regards,

John.

I'm not really clear what you're looking for. Are you looking for studio setup instructions, or the lighting setup equipment, or pictures of lighting setups? What kind of graphics are you looking for? Photographs, artwork, copies of artwork, or just pictures of studio setups?

I think he is looking for an automated software program instead of hiring a Graphic Designer to do the work.

John, What you are proposing can be accomplished with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or even Photoshop.

Yes Jerry, that's exactly what I'm after. My drawing skills are not what they used to be, and I'm looking for the easy way out.
I need to draw a diagram of each lighting set-up for each image. I am looking for an easy option like that attached to Curtis's forum post, but capable of higher resolution.

Download the lighting set up file at the bottom left hand side of that page.

Kevin Kertz Photography

It is a .psd file and will help you to visualise what you want to because you move each object around on a separate layer. Sadly, it isnot for commercial use. If you are on a Mac, there is no better tool than OmniGraffle and I recall seeing some extra stencils that included lighting.

Thanks for that Jeff. Looks like the same file as on Curtis's post.

I guess I'll have to go draft up my own version

Thanks for your help gents.

John.

Re: Studio layout graphics packages

As a newly graduated Graphic Designer, I am curious about programs that claim to make designing "fast and easy". I thought I would try the OmniGraffle program that was used to create the lighting diagrams and here is what I found:

1. OmniGraffle Pro (needed for high quality print) costs $199. You can try it for 14 days at no cost.

2. It is not that intuitive and takes some time to learn. While the tools are fairly basic, the interface is awkward.

3. While it comes with a basic set of pre-designed "objects" or stencils, photography and lighting are not among them. You can download user created stencils from a site called Graffletopia but the closest stencils I could find for a photographic lighting setup were "Camera Staging" and "Film Lighting" which were more suited for theatrical lighting for stage production.

4. The stencils used by the example provided by Kevin Kertz were not to be found anywhere leading me to believe they were custom designed and not available to the general public.

5. Creating your own stencils using OmniGraffle is difficult as the included drawing tools are very limited and awkward to use. You can import stencils from Microsoft Visio 2007, it is a PC only program and part of the $500. Microsoft Office Professional 2007 package.

In my opinion, this program is not worth the effort or money. You would better use your time and resources to hire a professional or use the Adobe Creative Suite to produce lighting diagrams.
