Open forum viewing a welcome change.

The recent announcement by Drew that all forums would be open to viewing by everyone is a welcome change, even for those of us that are dedicated members. It hopefully will substantially increase the traffic on this site, which should benefit the membership by more participation, and ultimately benefit the site through more advertisement access and participation. Thank you for the change!

I must have missed that announcement. Can someone point my nose in the right direction. I'd like to read it myself before posting my opinion.

Re: Open forum viewing a welcome change.

Open reading kind of dillutes or defeats the 'pro only' bit, the can't hide behind fake names, etc. Do we want newbies and wannabes learning but not contributing?
I'm against it as it changes what this place is. Yeah, it may get busier, but do we want more clutter, noise and chatter?

Re: Open forum viewing a welcome change.

I did receive the email yesterday and been way too busy to reply - also waiting for someone else to stick their head in the fire first - thanks Chris

I did not renew my yearly membership to DWF (another former pro forum). In the past year or two, so many of the pros that I respect either dropped out or rarely post. Most of the posts are simply junk (IMHO) and are from wannabees that are shooting weddings and screwing up big time. I found that I wasted too much time for the benefit. The cost of $139/year was a very minor issue.

There are very few decent forums for working pros.

This forum has had a small group of dedicated readers who have a wonderful ability to agree and disagree with each other on many issues. It's almost always kept in a professional level and it's very rare that I find anything not worth reading. (except maybe any posts after the first 2,000 on ColorParrot ) I'm sure I post a few things that annoy people as much as I get annoyed, but controversy when kept civil is almost always good.

Sad to say, this forum has not attracted more working full time pros. I wish I had an answer besides the obvious. Many pros are simply secretive and when they find something wonderful (even if it's really not) they milk it for all it's worth on the seminar circuit. Gee, I can't imagine how any good working pro can find the time.

If this forum opens all the posts to wannabees, it won't take long for the working pros to get moving on somewhere else - is there somewhere else??? I would hope that maybe Drew can save a hidden 'member by invitation section' that can be used. I have no problem sharing many things with non-full time pros, but I'm getting to be a crusty old SOB and I'm sick to death of wannabees bidding 1/3 to 1/2 of a realistic price on contracts I've been doing for years at a fair price. If I was rich or gouging, it would be my own fault. I'm far from it.

So, I'm no longer going to share anything that I consider important marketing info with anyone who I think is chopping prices to compete against either me or any other full time pro. I've said that on another school photographers forum and rec'd lots of flak but that's life.

People can agree or disagree, it really won't matter or affect my opinion.

Well, Drew it's in your ballpark. I respect your decision whatever that may be. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do to keep the bread on the table.

Re: Open forum viewing a welcome change.

I think? there may be some confusion about what open viewing means.

We have had open viewing ever since the landslide vote here. However, I made a change a little over a year ago to limit the open viewing to the first 500+ characters of the replying posts. Most posts were less than 500 characters, so this information has always been public. The limitation was put in to try and drive additional revenue by encouraging people to pay to read the full posts.

Open viewing also does not mean that others can post without being a paid member. Nothing has changed here. There are the exact same 5 "open forums" that we have had for a long time.

In addition, the "full member" forum is still entirely private, as it always has been. It is not indexable by search engines. As always, please do feel free to post more sensitive or private information in this area.

I doubt the full open viewing will change much of anything in terms of posting. The only reason I changed it back to full open viewing is because it didn't seem to be making much of a difference in the number of people joining up. In fact, I was often receiving annoying emails about wanting to be able to fully see what they were buying before they pay. What can you say? Everyone still thinks the internet is free. But, that is not the reason for changing it, either. I do not think this will lead to more people paying to join. Would be great if it helped, but not the point.

So, why bother?

Well, I think it makes the site look a little cleaner to potential new members. I also think it may improve overall traffic because google will be able to index the full post and not just the first 500 characters or so. As you can probably tell we have made a lot of effort to try and start earning revenue more through advertising and products. Because, if it was up to paid memberships alone, this site would have had to close down a long time ago.

This site is a great site, imho. I like the pro orientation of the site. In no way am I trying to change this. In fact, I really don't have paid membership as my main priority for the site anymore. I really view it as a nice collection of pro minded folks who have a lot to share. I like the slow, but steady organic growth that we have.

The goal is not to increase the post count or membership numbers. Yes, I think I've finally made my peace with that. Quality is what we have and I would like it to stay that way.

To me it isn't that big of a deal, really. At the end of the day, I'm not sure it will make that much difference in traffic, either.

Does everyone want to have a new vote? I'm happy to turn partial viewing back on if that is what most paying members prefer.

Drew,

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I like the forum how it is and would not want or ask you to change a thing. Thanks.
