Re: The economy vs photography

Hi all
I read Ian d Griffiths comment earlier and I have to say I had a rye grin on my face, if you want to know what being stuffed for petrol(gas) prices is like, you want to try living in the UK, it seems the car owner is the easiest target for a tax hungry govt.

I'm glad he did the relevant conversion, closer to $10 a gallon in some places.

For the original starter of the thread, looking to economise here and there. I don't have four printers, but the ones used for paperwork, I get the cartridges refilled a few times before they fail, it's cheaper and lasts a good while, print quality not an issue, seems fine for purpose.
If you do a lot of printing consider a bulk inflow system for your epson.

For fear of opening a real can of worms, I wonder how much a gallon or litre of ink costs compared to petrol?. lol

Re: The economy vs photography

Will there be, or is there, a recession? And how or will it affect us, and how much? How many of us remember the last couple of recessions (early 80s, early 90s)? Photography is a luxury item that is going to be one of the first things to get cut out of people's budgets when the month exceeds the money available.

There may also be a secondary reaction to a slow economy - a million more weekend warriors looking to pick up a quick buck to help with their bills. This will add to the pressure to lower our prices.

I find the unemployement chart enlightening. My market area is in the 4-4.9% range (national average is 4.6%) just to my west in Ohio all the border counties are 6 to 6.9% and I do see lower wedding packages and more weekend warriors there. I've not been able to book anything there as I'm about 50% above what I see there, wedding pkg wise.

Have you got a plan for a slowing economy? What's going on in your area, and do you have more than a gut feeling to back that up?

Already seeing it Chris. And remember it well from the last time.

The last time, this board was by another name, and it was free. So we had so many folks coming on the board and saying "I lost my job, and I need to make some money fast. Tell me everything I need to go out and do this photography thing."

So I expect to see more of the same.

This time around though, better equipment and cheaper = more weekend warriors with little to no business acumen.

OH Boy Muse, one of my favourite subjects.
19ML cart for $ 38.00 = $ 2.00 a ML or $ 2,000.00 ltr.
Apparently Epson is the worst.
It's not the ink that drives the price up it is the containers.
I read at one time there is a movement somewhere to have printer manufacturers provide the printers with tanks instead of cartridges.
But then again the printer manuf. would lose the sales of the proprietary products so would the price of printers skyrocket.

Cheers
Chris

Not to mention replacing a print head removes the problem of the prior head being clogged, essentially restoring the printer's function to "as new".

All I can say re fuel prices is GOSH I'm glad I'm a telecommuter.

Re: The economy vs photography

I just read something in the paper today. It said that everytime the Fed {USA} lowers the interest rate it lowers the dollars value. Everytime the dollar loses value the price per barrel goes up. Everytime the price per barrel goes up, a gallon of gas goes up. Catch 22?

No one's in control. The US government isn't all-powerful, financially.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Get your money into safe investments while you still can! *

* Note: I am not a professional investment advisor. Do not listen to me. Whatever I say is pure opinion, and not based on anything other than a layman's observation of the frenetic spiral of a society that's becoming more and more incapable of doing any actual work and just wants to sit on its butt. Just let me get my money out of the market first, okay?
