Software for best throughput and quality

I have personally launched myself into the digital market recently with the purchase of a D30, and the paper I work for is in the process of doing so via D1h's.
My question is what software products do working professionals find invaluable to speed up through put of the digital files, archiving/databasing, and quality output?

Also if you use several software titles in conjuction is there a pattern you follow from input to output through the software programs you recommend?

I'm of course very familiar with PShop, heard about Bibble and PhotoMechanic but have to learn more about what they do and which work well with each other and why other professionals have settled on them for their purposes.

Thank you.
Dan Creighton
