Just got my D90,
I don't get it, if I shoot JPEG, or RAW, the files are there
but in RAW+JPEG setting, both files are JPEG, no RAW
where did I go wrong ?

Sorry, don't have a Nikon but it's a common enough problem. Assuming the camera is set correctly, I suspect that you are not using the Nikon software and your other software (PS or whatever) has not been updated for the newer Nikon raw, so it can't open it or see it.
Just a thought.

Thank Doug
but I'd assumed that window should be able to "see" it in the explorer
As I've mentioned, RAW (only) is there
but in RAW+JPEG, the file are DSC_### and DSC_###(#) and the other one is not a NEF

"the file are DSC_### and DSC_###(#) and the other one is not a NEF"
You mean DSC_123 and DSC_123(2)?
That means that it thinks there are two copies of the same jpg file, which means it does not recognize the NEF format version. I think Doug is right, and Explorer is not recognizing the new version of the NEF. You can get a version of the Microsoft RAW file viewer which will probably correct it. In any case the software you now have does not recognize the NEF file, or the version of that NEF file.
In other words, the RAW file is actually there, but your software is not reporting it as a RAW file. If you obtain the latest version of the Nikon software, it should recognize it, or corresponding later versions of other software such as LightRoom, ACR, Bibble, or other proprietary software.

Dennis & Doug,
this is what the folder looks like
the one in parentheses is the file that developed when the setting is RAW+JPEG
the NEF file is when the setting is RAW only
I've no problem opening the RAW or viewing it as thumbnail
I've ADOBE CAMERA RAW installed

That's really interesting, that you have an Adobe XMP file named the same as the NEF file.
One thing I might suggest is that you change your defaults NOT to hide the file extensions, so that, for instance, "DSC_0020" will show as "DSC_0020.jpg." This may help to troubleshoot the problem. At present, all you can see is the icon view which labels the image as JPEG, regardless of what it actually may be.
Have you looked at the () jpg files with any Nikon software? If they recognize the NEF files, then you have a problem with Explorer recognizing them. If the Nikon software does not recognize the NEF files, then you may have a problem with the labeling in the camera itself. That could be a firmware bug in the camera, which Nikon will address.
Perhaps someone else with a D90 will pop up and give us some advice here. (Please!)

Alas,
NIKON VIEWNX also "sees" it as JPEG
this is really weird
for the sake of testing, I even switch to several type of SD cards
and ..........same result
using CAMERA CONTROL PRO2, the files created (in the hardisk) are OK,
both JPEG & RAW appeared normally
