Well a D700 in DX mode will produce a 5 MP image, while a D300 image will be 12 MP. You will still get the same high ISO performance with the D700, which is better than that of the D300. I shot for years with a D1 and D1H at 2.7 MP and a D2Hs at 4 MP and rarely had the need for more resolution in my event photography. Now I shoot with my D3 and although I enjoy its higher resolution I could live with 5 MP. I could not live without its high ISO performance.
So it depends IMO on what you need - resolution or better high ISO performance.

In general, putting a DX lens on an FX camera is less than desirable. The D700 is an outstanding camera with a great feature set. Put a normal (non-DX) lens on it and enjoy. If DX lenses were my only option, I would stick the D300 or find a clean D2Xs.
What are you shooting that would force you to mount a DX lens on an FX camera?

It's not what I'm shooting, it's just that after jumping into digital with D100 long time ago, I've let go most of my FX lenses. And I don't feel like buying new (and expensive FX lens)
Also to answer Luke's question, I do want the resolution while getting the high ISO performance. Looks like a NO NO with D700 then.
maybe just wait for the next DX body , they are getting better all the time
I'm still hoping for a better HIGH ISO noise in the future, which I'm sure Nikon will deliver

Michael, I know how you feel regarding the expense of upgrading equipment. If you need a camera now, the D300 will be a nice upgrade to your D100. If you can afford to build a system over time, I would urge you to look at the D700 or the D3. Both are tremendous cameras and coupled with the 24-70 and 70-200 you truly have most everything you need with two lenses. I made the switch from DX to FX and I would highly recommend it.

Thanks Michael, I do have a D300 and D80 as a backup, along with several DX lenses. If money is no concern, I'd definitely jump into FX too.
When I'm still with the D100, I'm still thinking about holding my FX lenses, but when the D200 came out, I never thought I'd see the day Nikon will come up with FX, so I let go most of my FX lenses and start purchasing DX.
I'm quite happy with DX bodies, it's the HIGH ISO noise that they have to improve, and I'm sure they will, in time.
I saw some test shots of D3x, and at HIGH ISO, the quality of the noise is "out of this world"
