With both Rob Galbraith and Strobist blog showing scanned documents of a brand new Nikon D3X I think it's pretty much a sure thing at this point. It seems like Nikon always has a document leak a few day before a release. mmmmmmm.... 24 megapixels

I've been getting by just fine with my D300 while me and my business partner have just stuck with the fact that for us and our business... we didn't need to buy either the D3 or D700, we're certain that we could continue happily with the D300's we have and I've kept my D200 because it's my personal opinion that it gives me crispier files (...I've had many debates).
I must be honest I'm re-organizing my finances I intend to get a bigger house as my children grow my family needs a little more space... so this will probably be my last move.
My wife doesn't bug me much about how I spend my money the kids go to good schools and we get by OK... so I'm adding the value of extra business expense to my dealings with the bank and I want to be smart. I've got good equity but I need to divide my direction well.
I'm thinking that I need some better modern lenses for sport while we have all the wedding stuff I'd ever dream of... for me I'm building a little media empire slowly with the right people around me and some good projects in the pipeline.
I've shot for billboards with my D300... I'm interested in the D3x there would be some IQ improvement at 16 bit processing.
I'm glad I didn't spend money on the D3 or D700...
When I weigh everything up I need to make sure money is spent wisely and not for reasons like keeping up with the other guys.
No customer ever asks me what I shoot with and that has never been a part of my strategy... delivering the best possible images is my slow and steady pace.
I've seen no reason to buy a D3 or D700 over the D300 but now that there seems to be a 24MP sensor coming soon with 16 bit... now that's something different.

I have to admit that it's way more than I need. I'm sure some commercial guys are going to get them, but 12MP is more than enough for anything I need to do.

can't say we've got much input into that though. I'm happy with the canon 40D (got 3) and don't see a need for more MP, but canon released the 50 at 15mp. Why?
Then the 5D2 is out with 21mp. Why? At least it's got an sRAW that lets you shoot RAW at 11mp so that's perfect. But I feel like I'm wasting what I'm paying for!
Is there a reason or a goal on more and more MP? Just because they can isn't a good enough reason. Is it market (advertising) driven? Shouldn't be in the D3x's target market. So what is the reason?
And if I don't care or need more MP then why do I feel 'my' camera company is behind in 'the race'?

Fashion, big wall portrait (although I know some well known guys who are doing great with the D3, and would trade the high MP for high ISO performance), and product photographers are going to love it. If you're making huge prints, or photographing things with intricate detail, then high MP'a are for you.
I can do a 24x36 inch print, or a double truck magazine spread, without losing any quality, with my 12MP camera, which is fine for me.
Chris... there are repercussions or maybe just possibly shock waves directed at the photographic industry with companies scrambling to come up with "the answer".
"Inter Medium" format (if you'll allow me to call it that) is a key section.
High quality files... the Mamiya 22MP offering tops out at ISO 400 and so does most of the other inter medium format shtuff available like Hassy etc...
ISO 100-1600 with 24million pixels at 16 bit along with the resolving quality of the most modern Nikkors...
I wonder who'll win this race. So far there are only two players... Nikon and Canon.
I'm still not convinced by Sony and I won't be convinced for a long time.
Why should I go out and Buy Zeiss AF lenses while there's nothing wrong with the Nikkors I have?
Tongue in cheek,
Bill.

Nothing says you actually have to USE all those megapixels. Most modern Bayer-pattern camera images are still slightly unsharp at full resolution... Color detail accuracy goes up and noise gets reduced very nicely with downsampling.
Perhaps the era of "Small Raw" format is dawning on the heels of the megapixel race.
I've read a comment by at least one person who's set their Canon 50D to "Small Raw" mode - 7.1 megapixels as I understand it - and is very happy with the results.
Seriously, most of us have had more resolution than we need for quite a while now.
